Well, last night's dinner party went quite well, I think. I stopped at the store on my way home to pick up some soda and a cheesecake for dessert, and then I went home and started making shells.
Why is it that the filling never comes out even? The last time I made stuffed shells, it worked out perfectly - all the filling went into most of the shells went into three baking dishes. This time, I filled the two larger baking dishes and still had almost half the filling left over, and a whole lot of pieces of shells. I gave up, and instead of stuffing any more shells, I made a sort of proto-lasagna by layering shell pieces, filling, and tomato sauce. Who knows what it'll taste like, but it looked pretty reasonable. I still wound up throwing away an awful lot of shells, though. Anyway, just about the time I was putting the shells into the oven to bake, Jeremy and Elizabeth rang the doorbell. Jeremy brought garlic bread - and I mean garlic bread. He'd sauteed several cloves of garlic in butter and oil, then soaked the bread in the oil. It was fantastic. Braz and Kris brought a salad. Well, I should say Kris brought a salad. It turned out to be a very elaborate salad - I'd been thinking just lettuce and maybe some cucumber or carrot, but in addition to those things, it had cheese and yellow peppers and red onion... It was really good. Kris told us that it started out much simpler, but as Braz kept not getting off his computer to come over, she'd started adding more and more things! She also brought us some cookies, which we definitely don't need! I hope she won't be too offended when she finds out I brought them to work today to offload them. (Some diet buddy!) I made a mix Italian dressing to go with the salad - oil and vinegar and a packet of herbs. I've had it before, and it's wonderful dressing. After adding the oil, I very carefully made sure the lid was closed before shaking the bottle. What I didn't realize was the if I held the cap the wrong way, it would pop open again. Only about a teaspoon of dressing escaped the bottle, but all of it landed on me. It's a talent. Of course, it landed on my favorite dress. I immediately took it off, smeared all the oil spots with Shout stain remover, and put it in the washer. The Shout took care of most of the spots, but there's still a faint spot on the left. I wonder if I could cover it - or at least distract the eye - with a pin or brooch... It's still my favorite dress. Half my clothes have oil spots on them. It's annoying. Maybe I should start dressing in oilcloth. Anyway, the food was all really good, and we had a good time. We should do this more often. ![]() I've been fiddling around with Perl lately, trying to teach myself. I've tried a few times before, and gotten bogged down in it. My especial nemisis is that I can never think of a project to assign myself. But when I did the survey on Saturday, I mentioned the possibility of putting it up as a form so other people could answer it, and yesterday, that's what I did. I think. It hasn't been extensively tested, yet. I guess we'll see. Anyway, if you want to answer the survey, go here. A couple of years ago, I wrote a Christmas Purity Test. Yeah, I'm a big ol' geek. Anyway, my current Perl project is to re-write the test as a form so I can post it (closer to Christmas, of course) for people to take for fun. And since that's almost done, I'm thinking of writing my own poll script, so when I want to ask you guys questions, I don't have to keep including mail links that never get used. Of course, I don't know how much a poll would get used, either, but we'll see. ![]() Word of the Day: demarcate - to mark the limits of; delimit; separate Oops. I left Instant Messenger running all night. I'd apologize to everyone who tried to say hi and didn't get a response, except no one tried to say hi. I'd snivel about how no one loves me, except I'm pretty sure my friends were smart enough to notice I'd gone "idle," check how long I'd been on, and figure out that I'd just forgotten to log out before I left work yesterday. I suppose I could whine anyway, but that would move me across the demarcation between "silly" and "absurd." |
