16 August 2000
Yesterday was eventful. Not the training session, of course. That was almost absurdly boring, and I spent most of it reading Anna Karenina on my Palm.

Not my trip to the podiatrist's office, either, though he finally noticed that my arch supports were built too high and replaced them with something a little more reasonable. I'm hopeful this will actually help in the long run.

But it was the evening that really had oomph to it.

Matt pulled into the driveway while I was still getting the mail out of the mailbox, and I waved cheerfully to my husband as I unlocked the door and went into the house.

The first thing I noticed was that the house was nice and clean - the cleaning fairies had come! Yay!

The second thing I noticed was that it was extremely warm - much warmer than the sun coming in through the window should have made it. I went and checked the wall unit. It was running. I checked a vent. Air was coming out, but it wasn't very cool. The A/C unit had crapped on us again.

Matt and I stomped and grumbled and bitched a bit, then Matt called and left a message with the repair crew, and we went over to Braz and Kris' for the evening. After eating their food and soaking up their A/C for a while, Braz and Matt decided they wanted to play a little tennis.

So we walked around to their neighborhood's clubhouse, and Braz and Matt played while Kris showed me around. The boys looked like they were having fun, and afterwards Matt and I talked about maybe picking up some inexpensive rackets at Target or somewhere so we could all play.

Okay, I'm compressing this a lot, mostly because I have to fix the polls. Apparently Braz, Kris, and Jeremy decided to use the Comment feature to its fullest extent. Braz was just silly. Jeremy decided to test HTML code in it (I hadn't bothered to test it, thinking that my readers were lovely nice people who wouldn't do something so ugly and awful as to put in a BLINK tag and not close it) so I had to download it this morning and fix it.

And as soon as I'm done with this, I have to fix the script that processes votes so it won't happen anymore. I'm leaving in all the silliness, though, if you want to read it.

So anyway, I came downstairs this morning to find Matt flipping through the TV channels and making notes on a piece of paper.

"They've changed all the stations," he told me.

"Have you found ESPN yet?" I asked. Matt usually watches ESPN in the mornings until it's time for him to head to work.

"No," he sighed, then perked up. "But I've found ESPN2 and ESPN Classic!"

I was surprised by the phone ringing. Who calls at 7 in the morning? It turned out to be the A/C repair folks, and my initial grump turned into being pleased. They could come by right at 8, if someone could be home. Since Matt had stayed home for the refrigerator repair guy earlier this week, I offered to stay home for the A/C repair.

After Matt left, I continued flipping through the TV channels. I got two or three more, then thought to compare the channel listings against the table in the TV guide. It looks like we've been switched to the Williamsburg lineup. If that's true, then we'll get Comedy Central now. (I wasn't sure - a lot of programming that early is infomercials, and while they all lined up with where the TV guide said they should be, there was no way to tell for certain which station I was watching.)

So the A/C guy showed up at 8 like he was supposed to, and checked everything, asked me a few questions, and said, "Huhn. It's working fine now." He fiddled around some more to make sure, but said the air coming out of the vents was at least 15 degrees cooler than the air going in, so whatever went wrong seems to have fixed itself. My guess is that maybe turning it off (which they asked me to do when they called at 7) and then turning it back on (which the repair guy did when he showed up at 8) reset it.

I guess I'll find out this afternoon when I get home from work. One thing's for sure, though - today I'm definitely going home at 4, so if it's not working I can call them before their office closes!

Word of the Day: foray - a brief excursion or attempt especially outside one's accustomed sphere; a raid

When I pulled into the parking lot this morning, I saw Random's car in his usual spot. Random usually gets to work around 10. I've never seen him here earlier than 9.

My first thought was, "I'm not that late!"

My second thought was, "Maybe he stayed all night?"

The actual reason for Random's foray into the World of Morning was that he'd spent the night with his girlfriend, and she'd asked, "What time do you want to get up?"

Random has his alarm set to go off at 7:30, because if he does that, then he's actually awake by 9:30. So he told her 7:30.

At 7:30, she said, "Wake up." He muttered and went back to sleep. At 7:45, she said, "Wake up." He muttered and went back to sleep.

At 7:47, she - quite literally - kicked him out of the bed.
