Yesterday morning I decided it was high time I harvested some of my basil and mint. I spent several minutes picking leaves and putting them into a baggie for future use. When I came back in and sat down to flip through a catalog, Diamond jumped up next to me on the sofa and started licking my fingers. And then gnawing on them. I'd push him off the couch, and he'd jump right back up. It was hysterically funny. Matt took some pictures, and asked if I'd harvested the catnip as well - but I hadn't even touched it!

I found out later that basil and mint are both relatives of catnip.

Matt's 7th Sea game was a blast, despite some, um, personality conflicts between various characters and players. I was complimented on my awful Russian accent, was moderately horrified (in character) at Kevin's noble character's lack of nobility, performed some fun foolery (like sliding down a bannister in an attempt to knock over the musketeers attacking us), and made both friends and enemies.

Kris has been "trying out" different churches in the area, trying to find one she'd feel comfortable joining. I told her that if she wanted to try the Unitarian church where Matt and I were married, I'd go with her. So Sunday morning Matt and I met Kris and Braz at their house, then went to church. Despite the long sermon, Kris was sufficiently intrigued that she wants to go back again.

Of course, we found out later what Kris' real religion is - when Matt and Braz were talking about various things in the car afterward, she interrupted, "Okay! We have to decide where we're going out to lunch! The only reason to go to church is so you can go out for lunch afterwards!"

Saturday afternoon, in an effort to get out of Matt's way while he finished up the 7th Sea stuff, I drove down to visit with my mom, and not so incidentally finally pick up my china, silver, and the silver-plated Japanese plates my grandparents gave us a couple of years ago.

The china and the silver once belonged to my mother's mother - my Grandmother Waters. My mom says she thinks my grandmother would be happy and proud to know it was now mine. I feel a sense of connection to her, having it. Already I'm trying to think of excuses to use it.

Of course, my mom wasn't completely sanguine about giving it over to my care. She only gave me six of the eight place settings of china.

Diet news: I've dropped a category! Whah-hoo! (Unless you're familiar with the Weight Watcher's program, you won't know what that means. I just wanted to celebrate.)

Having a "diet buddy" is making a lot of difference. When we go out to eat, Kris and I spend some time going over the menus together, comparing numbers from our databases, debating the relative merits of various foods. Matt was always patient with my number-crunching, but it's nice to actually have a friend participating with me. If only we could actually manage to play tennis a little more often...

Last Friday, the law got laid down on my supervisor and my officemates: They are to be in the office no later than 8:30 in the morning. Since they'd been coming in at 10, this will be quite a change... If nothing else, coffee consumption is going to increase dramatically.

The laying of law didn't affect me much - I'm usually in the office by 7:30 unless I've got some good reason to stay home. On the other hand, there goes my quiet few hours in the morning when I used to actually get stuff done.

Word of the Day: ingenuous - showing innocent or childlike simplicity and candidness; lacking craft or subtlety

The biggest argument we had in the 7th Sea game was whether or not to try to bluff the musketeers who'd followed us down into the catacombs underneath the city. When they arrived, Kevin's and Braz's characters bolted, leaving K.T. and I no choice but to follow. The entire time we ran through the catacombs, getting lost in the maze, my character argued with Kevin's: "Ve could haf bluffed zem!"

"They're musketeers!"

"Va haf papers, no? For passage?"

"We're supposed to be protecting our patron from discovery!"

"She vas safely away! Zee musketeers come in, and ve say, 'Oh, officers, ve are so happy to zee you! Ve vere exploring, and got lost!'"

Like that. I got pretty irritable at Kevin, actually. I had been desperately hoping for interaction that wouldn't necessarily lead to combat. Alas, Matt let me know that a display of ingenuousness on my part wasn't going to work, anyway.
