Good weekend. Busy, but good. Friday evening, Kris, Elizabeth, and I were planning to meet up and watch the boys play Ultimate Frisbee. Kris had to work late, though, and by the time Elizabeth and I decided to stop waiting for her and get over to the field, the Ultimate game was over.
We decided once we were all together to go over to the Corner Pocket and play some pool. Matt and Jeremy, who had actually been playing frisbee, decided to go home first and shower, and then meet the rest of us there. Until they showed up, we joked, it looked like "Braz and his girls." Mark up a personal first for me, about five years too late: We had drinks on the table, and shortly after Jeremy showed up, the waitress came around to take our food orders. I decided my diet couldn't withstand anything on the menu. Just as she was heading back to the bar and kitchen, she leaned a little closer to me and said, "That gentleman over there paid for your drink." She pointed briefly behind her. I looked past her across the room, and saw any number of gentlemen playing pool, but there was no one I knew. No one looked up to acknowledge it, either, so I never did figure out who it was. It was flattering , but... When Matt showed up, I demanded a kiss. We're not usually that affectionate in public, but it was a little creepy. Anyway, we had fun playing pool. At least, I did. I enjoy playing pool, but I completely suck at it. I even know what my problems are (my elbow wobbles, and I don't follow through) but I can't seem to fix it. No matter. It's fun anyway. Braz, of course, was kicking everyone's ass - there was a pool table at his last job, and he played at least a couple of times a day. Matt was feeling competitive (no help that he felt he hadn't done well at Ultimate or the lunchtime video game tournament that day) so he was a little irritable, but I didn't let it bother me. Saturday was a relatively lazy day. Matt and I spent most of it lounging around reading or watching TV. I went shopping at one point, but nothing much happened until the 7th Sea game. Our doughty band of adventurers discovered we were sailing with slavers, and did the only thing we could: We defeated the captain, locked the crew into their bunks, and hailed a passing ship to give us a skeleton crew to take us to the nearest port so we could find another ship. The new ship is much more fascinating, being commissioned by an archaeologist-adventurer with mysterious artifacts. After several strong hints that we should ask the archaeologist about the artifact we were given to help with our mission, my character managed to talk everyone else into doing just that. (They're taking the "secrecy" part of our mission a little too seriously - we're not supposed to hide ourselves, just keep secret who our patron is!) Anyway, since this is apparently one of the plot points, Matt activated my character's flaw (stubborn) and forced me to keep arguing until everyone agreed. It's actually the first time I've felt my character has done any good in the game. Matt promised there was some more intellectual stuff coming up, though, and I'm really enjoying the game, even if I am useless in combat. Sunday was Braz's birthday, so we met Braz and Kris and Jeremy and Elizabeth for a late lunch (or early supper, whichever) at Chili's. After that, we went back to Braz and Kris' for birthday cake and ice cream. After that, Braz decided he wanted to play miniature golf. There's an impressive-looking set of courses not far from where Jeremy and Elizabeth live, so we headed over there. I haven't played miniature golf since I was about thirteen, so I expected to completely suck. I didn't do well, but I didn't actually do badly, either. From an expected par of 39, I got a 54. We'd paid to play both courses, but by the time we finished the first, Jeremy was completely exhausted (he was fighting allergies) and the rest of us were half-eaten by mosquitos, so we called it a night and got rain checks for the second course. I'm actually looking forward to going. Then Matt and I went back to Braz and Kris' for a while to watch The Princess Bride, which we'd given Braz for his birthday. Since Kris was doing charting for work, the three of us clustered around Braz's laptop and evaluated most of the movie as if it were a 7th Sea game, breaking to recite along with our favorite lines. I'm a little tired this morning, but that's to be expected. The weekend went so fast. But it was good. A nice mixture of sitting around doing nothing and going out and doing things. Fun, food, and friends - some of the best things in life. Word of the Day: doughty - marked by fearless resolution; valiant |
