How's the saying go? Pride goeth before a fall?
Matt and I went to play Ultimate Frisbee last night, and I stayed in for the whole two-hour session. I worked through cramps in my legs, twinges in my knee, and a slightly twisted ankle. After the first twenty minutes or so, I was walking more than running, but I still managed to put on the occasional burst of speed. I caught another scoring point, and at least managed to get in Braz's way a couple of times. (Yeah, Braz and I were guarding each other again. I need to extend my arms another foot and a half.) But mostly, I was feeling proud of myself for managing to stay in for the entire session. I did decide to take a break at one point, but everyone else decided that would be a good time for a short water break just then, too, and when they headed back out to the field to line up, I went with them. As we walked back across the field to the cars, I could feel my leg muscles and tendons slowly tightening in the cold. "It's a good thing I don't have any meetings tomorrow," I said, "because I'm not going to be able to get out of my chair once I sit down." After I showered, and the hot water had relaxed those muscles again, I carefully stretched: hamstrings, to keep the knees in working order; calves, to keep the fascitis at bay. I was a bit stiff as I got ready for bed, but not terribly so. I had every reason to believe I'd be able to walk today. Ha. Ha, ha, ha. Though it's not stiffness that's immobilized me. As usual, Diamond woke me up around 4 this morning. I groaned and muttered and sat up, the pushed myself carefully vertical. So far, so good - my knees were stiff, but not overly so. Then I tried to take a step. Have you ever had a really severe bruise? The kind where you're astonished the bone underneath is still in one piece, that can't bear even the lightest of touches? Now imagine that pain covering the entire bottom of your right heel. Fascitis flare-up. I don't know whether it was the running (though I didn't do a lot) or trying to keep up with Braz's zig-zagging that did it, but I couldn't walk. I couldn't even limp on tip-toe, because bending my foot that far stretched the skin until it pulled and was just as painful. I sat back down with a thump! I have the most wonderful husband in the entire universe. He got up (on his own stiff knees) and went downstairs to put the cat in the garage. He brought me a glass of water and one of my anti-inflammatory pills. I took the pill and hoped desperately that it would have taken effect by this morning. I suppose it had. By the time the alarms went off this morning, I could limp along on tip-toe, so that was an improvement. But it isn't pleasant, and when I sit down and take the weight back off the foot, the blood rushing back in makes it hurt almost worse than trying to put my weight on it. So I'm going to be sitting right here in this chair all day. I'll get up if I have to go to the bathroom. I'll get up around noon to fix my lunch, and I'll take another anti-inflammatory and some painkillers around then. But I'm not walking any more than absolutely necessary. I'm quailing at the thought of going to the grocery store this evening. I guess maybe it's a good thing we'd already planned to skip Ultimate on Wednesday. Ow. ![]() Three! ![]() So, tomorrow is Election Day here in the States. All you citizens, get out and vote! If you don't vote, you're not allowed to bitch for the next four years! Matt and I will be voting before work, if possible. Aside from getting to wear that cool "I Voted!" sticker all day, we figure the polling places will be less crowded in the morning than in the evening. That's assuming our polling place will be open at 7, which is when we generally leave for work. I thought they opened at 6, but I don't know if that's national mandate or a local decision. Anyway, we'll see. Our polling place is only maybe a mile from where we live, so it's not terribly far out of our way in any case. My voter's registration card is in my wallet, tucked behind my driver's liscense. Where's yours? ![]() Word of the Day: quail - to lose heart; cower |
