Well, I'm about twenty minutes late for work today, but I've voted. Now I'm entitled to bitch about the "gummint" and those fools who run it.
One of the items on the Virginia ballot is a proposed amendment to the state (excuse me, "Commonwealth") constitution, making hunting and fishing a protected right. Now, as sympathetic as I am to people who enjoy those activities, they are not rights. If it had been a vote for a state law banning them, I'd have voted against that - but I don't think that leisure activities should be constitutionally protected. As we were leaving, the fellow out front who was hawking for the Democrats asked Matt and I if we'd like to sign his petition. He pointed to a bright green sign taped on the post: It was calling for a similar amendment to protect our right to shop. Hee hee hee... Say what you will about the Democrats, but they've got a good sense of humor. Now, I just have to get through today, and I won't have to hear any more political advertisements. With Election Day upon us, they have abandoned all pretense of nuance and are raining down sledgehammer blows. ![]() Because I had so much trouble walking yesterday, I stopped at a medical supply store on my way home and bought an adjustable aluminum cane for about $16. Given that for most of yesterday, I could only walk if I had something to lean on, I thought it was a good investment. I have an appointment with my foot doctor today. But naturally, two hours after I'd bought the cane, the pain receded to the point that I could walk with only a mild limp as long as I was careful to walk on the outside edge of the foot. I didn't complain too much - if $16 is all it takes to make that kind of pain go away, I'll pay it every time! Not that it matters - there really wasn't anything worth looking at, anyway, and I can still describe the pain for my doctor today quite well. I didn't even want him to do anything in particular at this visit - I just want him to agree to a more aggressive treatment than we've been working on. It's obvious that this isn't going to respond well to only stretching and anti-inflammatories, and I have no intention of going through that kind of pain every time I want to spend a couple of hours playing! ![]() Two! ![]() Matt and I got an invitation to a wedding yesterday: My father-in-law and his girlfriend are going to be married in approximately one month. We'd known they were engaged, but the last time we talked to them, they hadn't settled on a date yet. Now Matt and I have to decide if we can go. One month is sortof short notice, especially at this time of year. And we were just up there in July. But still, it's Matt's dad... Ah, well, I misspoke. Matt has to decide if we're going. He's got less leave than I do, and it would be his company Christmas party that we'd be backing out of. (Not that the company Christmas party is a major consideration when stacked against a family wedding, but still.) ![]() Yesterday was a day for packages. I got packages from American Science and Surplus (which I'm not opening yet because it's all Christmas stuff - mostly stocking stuffers), Lane Bryant (finally! Bras that fit!), Meisha Merlin (you know a publishing house is small when your orders come to you hand-addressed), and Columbia House Video (another Babylon 5 tape!). Whee! It's like Christmas! ![]() Anyway, you all have a good day, and for petesake, get out there and vote! ![]() Word of the Day: nuance - a subtle distinction, variation, or quality; nicety |
