Okay, I know it's starting to be a tradition for me to say this around the 20th of each month, but where the heck did the month go??? Three of the seven houses on our cul-de-sac have already got up their Christmas lights, for petesake! I'm going to start working on Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. (Which reminds me, I need to remember to call my mom tonight and tell her what I need to borrow out of her silver chest.)
I'm starting to get excited about the holidays, finally. I've been planning for them for weeks, but finally, I'm beginning to acquire that roseate view that means I'm ready for the celebrations. ![]() A lot of good things have happened over the past couple of days. I finally found a cellular phone plan that I think I like; it's a "family plan" (meaning both Matt and I would have a phone on a shared bank of minutes) with free long distance. (I'll call them today to make sure I understand their roaming policy and stuff, and I'd like to make sure we can call each other on the plan, but I think it's going to be a go.) I'm getting braver about my crocheting. I've been crocheting with yarn for several years, but just recently I picked up thread crocheting. (I've been joking: I picked up crocheting because it was easier on the eyes than cross-stitch had been, and here I am squinting at elaborate snowflakes half the size of my palm.) Yesterday I bought some thread that had silver strands intertwined with it, and I'm working on some patterns that cover standard tree balls. They're turning out pretty well, even if I'm still working on the gauge. And yesterday, I finally went to Staples and bought a binder, and now all those untidy patterns are neatly confined and organized. I checked my recipe for the potatoes au gratin dish I'm making for Thanksgiving, and it calls for egg yolks, but no whites. That means I'll have six leftover egg whites when I'm done with this dish. What, oh what, shall I do? Don't I have a recipe that calls for egg whites? Why, yes, as a matter of fact! Meringue kisses, here I come! I could even get really ambitious and make pumpkins again; I still have half a bag of chocolate chips. My project at work is going both better and worse than I'd hoped at this stage. I've started adding things that I can't test, because the programmer who's in charge of one of the crucial mid-stage components is in Baltimore on business until further notice. But since I can't go much further without him here, I started yesterday breaking the individual components down into easily-replaceable modules, which is a much better design strategy than the one I'd started with, which was, more or less, "AAAAH! It's due in three weeks! Slap something together! AAAAH!" (That "due in three weeks" bit, by the way, has been shoved back to mid-December or possibly even January. I'm not actually surprised.) And, of course, I'm preparing for the holidays, which always makes me happier. ![]() Don't think I've forgotten you guys, either! I'm making plans for the journal like you wouldn't believe! Well, okay, you probably would believe them. I'm working to bring back the Christmas Purity Test, with scoring built in this time. I'm working on a special treat just for the notify list, and I'll be organizing a Christmas card exchange soon - I'll post the details when there are any! Brace yourselves! Here it comes! ![]() Word of the Day: roseate - like a rose; rose-colored; overly optimistic |
