Well, I tried the fudge recipe change last night - that is, I substituted unsweetened baking chocolate for chocolate chips. It hardened just fine - a little too fast, even. I'm not sure about the flavor, though. It's good, but there's a slightly bitter aftertaste. I may start a little diary on the back of the recipe card, tweaking things slightly each time. My next thought is to try it with half unsweetened baking chocolate, and half semi-sweet. Although actually, I think I need to work Hershey's cocoa into it somehow, which will be tricky, since I think the wax in the chips is part of what holds the fudge together. Hmm. Have to think about it some more, I suppose.

Anyway, the fudge is certainly good enough to send to the grandparents (who probably won't eat it anyway) and to take to work and such.

I've been playing the game Diablo lately. It's probably the perfect video game for me - it could only be better if it were turn-based instead of realtime. In fact, it's essentially a souped-up version of Moria, which is an ASCII-based game I've enjoyed for years.

Last night I forgot one essential rule of video games: Before you crawl down into a dark tunnel, save the friggin' game! I was doing okay with the little blue kobold-things (I don't know what the game calls them; I can't spare the time to look at the part of the screen that names them while I'm fighting them, and it doesn't tell me anything after they're dead, so I give everything my own names) but this minotaur-looking thing came out from a blind corner, and before I noticed it I was dead. Oops. And I hadn't saved since before entering the previous level. Oops again.

Oh, well, it's an amusing game. I'm sure I'll enjoy it immensely after my surgery. (Matt has it on his Powerbook, even, so I might be able to play without leaving the couch.)

Yesterday was Scary Mike's last day. It had been less than a week since he'd turned in his resignation, but apparently the political back-biting that was resulting from his decision to leave was too much for him to handle, and he arranged to skip town early. He did leave contact information on our whiteboard, which is good, because we never quite finished going through the stuff that only he had worked on.

He left behind quite a mess. He hadn't cleaned off his desk in a least six months, and he didn't do any cleaning before he left, except to take home the stuff that was his. I'm sortof tempted to just shove everything into a garbage bag, but some of that is probably useful. Alas.

So now Random and I are going to be waiting for a new officemate. I hope it'll be someone who can share our somewhat peculiar sense of humor. Actually, I think it would be cool if Rhonda could move in, but I don't know if that's a possibility. I wonder who I'd ask...

I'm fighting a cold. I hope it goes away soon; I really don't need to be congested while I'm flying. Or at a wedding. Or ever, really.

Why yes, my brain is a little scattered today; thanks for noticing.

Oooh. I just rebuilt my iBook, and it got cheaper. Not much, but a little. Oh, I see; the USB Zip drive went down. I'm telling you, I almost want Christmas to hurry up and be over so I can go ahead and order this computer.

Hey. Maybe I should put some of the accessories and add-ons (like the Zip drive or the power adapter) on my wishlist. Though I think everyone who might buy me that sort of thing (i.e., Matt) has already got whatever they're going to get.

Word of the Day: inkhorn - ostentatiously learned; pedantic
