28 December 2000
Everyone ready? Take a deep breath, and get ready to plunge back in to a busy weekend? Today will be pretty restful, but the weekend will be sortof crazy.

Tomorrow, I have a doctor's appointment in the afternoon; just a check-up on my foot. (And while I'm there, I need to ask the doctor why half my foot is still numb. I swear, I have the worst trouble with these things...) Also, at some unspecified time, Jeff will be arriving. (Ack! That means I really need to clear off the guest bed tonight!)

Saturday, at some time that has yet to be determined, but probably in the afternoon, Matt and I will go over to my parents' house to exchange Christmas presents with them. Since they will have just finished a three day drive (after a three-day visit with my grandparents and the three-day drive that got them there) I'm guessing my parents will be pretty exhausted. So I'm planning to volunteer to bring some of the broth I made from the Thanksgiving turkey and make soup for us for dinner. (Jeff, while we do this, is probably going to be at K.T. and Kevin's, gaming or watching anime. I don't want you to think that we're completely abandoning our guest to boredom.)

Sunday is New Year's Eve. We're not planning a big bash like we had last year, but we'll clean up the living room, set out what's left of the holiday cookies and candy and some chips and dip, lay in a stock of soda, and invite our friends over. I'm toying with the idea of making it an entirely non-alcoholic party, just to make absolutely sure none of our friends drive intoxicated, but I don't know about that, yet. But Sunday should be fairly relaxed. I hope.

Monday, of course, is New Year's Day. Matt's mom sent us some holiday cinnamon pancake and waffle mix, so I thought it might be nice to use it to make waffles for breakfast (or maybe brunch) to ring in the new year. (Not to mention the new millennium!) Other than that, I have no set plans, so hopefully I'll be able to relax enough to deal with work.

And somewhere in there - hopefully today! - Matt's van will be fixed.

So yesterday morning I went to the post office and stood in line for a short while (but boy am I glad I went before noon!) and handed over my slip to the clerk behind the counter. Before he could disappear with it, I explained to him about the six expected packages, and that one of them was sent in the first week of December. He looked somewhat puzzled, and promised to look around a bit in the back room for me.

After a few minutes, he came back with an enormous box from Karen - the one specified by the slip. He asked me to wait a little longer while he checked some other locations, and eventually he came back with the third box from Jill, knitting his brows at the "Box 3/3" on it, until I assured him that we'd already gotten boxes 1 and 2. He searched some more, but couldn't find any other boxes.

I wasn't too upset. The original CDNow box, I figure, got lost in transit somewhere, while the other CDNow box had been mailed less than two weeks previous. John's package and one Amazon package are all only about a week in the mail, and the sixth package - the other Amazon shipment - was only shipped yesterday.

But if we don't get the second CDNow shipment soon, I'm going to tell them to put the kibosh on that order, refund all my money, and I'll just order the CDs from someplace else. Sheesh! (But I'm still hoping they'll show up today or tomorrow...)

Anyway, I wanted to just say: kudos to the postal clerk. It's a rough time of year for them, and I'd anticipated some shortness and impatience, and was even prepared to deal with rudeness. But he spent at least ten minutes looking for my packages, despite the slowly growing line (there were only two clerks working yesterday morning), and then he helped me carry the boxes out to my car. Three cheers for postal clerks who are not only surly, but helpful and polite!

I'm working on a new site design for the new year. I'm still playing with it, but it's going to be much simpler. No monthly graphics, fewer tables (that should help it load faster in Netscape, which in newer versions loads an entire table before displaying it - how annoying!) and, all in all, a simply smoother design. I'm toying with the idea of dividing everything into thematic sections (cf. the Book of Rob) so it's easier for you to skip over stuff that bores you.

I'm also planning some behind-the-scenes stuff, like renaming the monthly archive pages from "archive.html" to "index.html" so certain people who know who they are, but who will remain nameless, won't be able to load the directories any more. But those should be pretty transparent changes to most of you.

So far, in case you're curious, the design isn't going to affect my main page or the main journal page. But I'm considering some changes to those, as well, so be on the lookout.

(Why is it that the new year prompts everyone to completely revamp their pages? Is it sortof like spring cleaning? The only journal I know that's never done a major design change is thought experiment.) Ah, well. I mean to unveil the new design on January first, with my New Year's Resolutions. You'll just have to wait until then.

Word of the Day: kibosh - something that serves as a check or stop
