Last year: He's trying to talk me into playing some EverQuest, and I gave him the URL for the Meade Hall.
Movement! The box of accessories for my PowerBook is in Virginia Beach, and the PowerBook itself is in Indiana! I won't get the PowerBook itself until Monday, of course, but I'm just happy to see it moving closer!
Okay, I promise, I won't babble about the PowerBook anymore. Today.
Okay, so only two people had any suggestions about what I should do with the check from the optometrist. Matt scoffed and said of course that was "mad money" - to be spent as I see fit. Kris, while writing about my new year's resolution to be more active, thought maybe I could put that money toward a bike.
Kris' idea is a good one, but of course I want spending money. So I might split it - part toward the bike, part just for fun. (I'm doing the same thing with my Christmas money from Matt's dad, only the "saved" portion of that is technically going toward the PowerBook.) Of course, the other problem is that I don't know how much the bikes I like best actually cost. Time to do some research, I suppose.
I need to remember to check the classifieds in the paper this weekend, to see if there's anything there that looks promising. My project, which is supposed to be finished in two weeks so it can be tested, has been completely rearranged. "Small" changes keep being made, but those changes have this trickle-down effect that can take days to sort out. Worse yet, people are telling me about possible changes that may affect me, but aren't sure when those changes will happen. Due to the nature of the project, I can't really move to accomodate those changes until after they happen.
Oh, and I've been here just over a year now, and have yet to hear a word about even a COLA (cost of living adjustment) raise. We get paid today. I'm going to check my bank account, and if I don't see a change, I'll have a little chat with my manager. Not that I expect it to do any good - the tightfisted bean counters at corporate don't think programmers are worth anything anyway.
I mean, money isn't the only reason to take a job, but if I can't actually take pride in my work, then money's about all that's left. And just lately, I've been in the mood to actually tell the managers that.
Right. Enough of that. I'm just winding myself up to no purpose.
So, Matt and I have a lot of shopping to do this weekend. I made a list. Eight different places we need (or want) to go. Most of them are down in Newport News, which means that logically, we should do them all in one day. My feet are aching already. Good thing there are plenty of places in that area to stop and rest.
On the other hand, it might actually be sortof fun. None of the trips are for things we really need. I'm not sure I'm really looking forward to bringing home and setting up the new DVD player, though. I'm insisting on a combination DVD/video player, I think, to prevent a huge pile-up on our entertainment center. But I'm always a little nervous about new technology that I have to learn. Not to mention the fact that we're going to have to move the entertainment center in order to get to all the wires and stuff, and that thing is heavy!
Maybe I'll just let Matt do it.
Nah. Couldn't stand to let him have the remote all the time.
(By the way... I don't want any offers of help with the hookup, and I don't want any of you to write and tell me how easy it all is. I especially don't want actual instructions. I do these things much better with the actual doohickey in front of me, and if I read instructional e-mail, I'm just going to panic. Once I have it in-hand, I'll probably feel much less intimidated.)
