Last year: Not bad for a Monday. Especially a Monday that, at the beginning, promised to be awfully long, subjectively.
Wow. This is going to sound a little weird, but despite bringing my PowerBook to work with me yesterday, and despite spending a fair amount of time playing with it, I actually got a lot of work done. (Yes, smartass, I mean work-work, the stuff I get paid to do.)
So of course I brought it back with me today. Unfortunately for me, I forgot today to bring the Zip drive, so I won't be able to install anything. But that's all right. I spent quite a bit of yesterday making MP3s from my CDs, and I even raided Matt's collection. So if nothing else, I can make some playlists and listen to a decent selection of music today.
Mac World San Francisco had its keynote speech yesterday. Our internet connection at work is too crappy for me to have watched it via QuickTime, but Braz kept me updated on Instant Messenger. I was worried that I would be jealous of the new PowerBooks - and they are nice, but...
I was originally going to get an iBook. If I'd waited until yesterday (or today) to order my computer, it would still be an iBook, because the new PowerBooks are back up to their accustomed price. Go back and read the second paragraph again. I'm using my 'book as a glorified jukebox! I do not need a state-of-the-art machine for this! (Yes, I'm doing more with it at home, but it's still nothing the very lowest-end iBook couldn't handle.) I only got the PowerBook because the pre-MWSF sale made it cheaper than the iBook.
I'm also not entirely pleased that they got rid of the expansion bays. I understand, from a business point of view: Why require hardware manufacturers to make both USB (or FireWire) devices and PowerBook expansion slots? But as a user, I like the slots. They're compact, easily portable, and don't require any wires. Again: I was willing to do without them for an iBook, but I appreciate them in the PowerBook.
In short... The new PowerBooks are nice, yeah. But I still like mine just fine.
Right on schedule. I've got a DVD-enabled computer; we got a DVD player for Christmas (though the one we exchanged it for hasn't come in yet). And yesterday, in the mail, I got an offer from Columbia House: get 4 DVDs for some absurdly cheap price, and buy three more in the next two years.
I have a rule, with offers like these: If I can find enough items that I like in the initial list they give me to close out the obligation, I'll go ahead and join. So I pored over the little stamps, and came up with six, plus a whole handful of movies I wasn't sure I wanted. I decided (also taking into account the certain knowledge that the sheet of stamps did not encompass their entire DVD library) that a lot of "maybe"s were worth one "yes". So I'll be joining Columbia House's DVD club. It'll be nice to have more than two DVDs we can watch.
MarsCon is this weekend. I can't say I'm actually excited about it - it's a relax-a-con. No need to get in a flap. But I'm looking forward to it. It's always nice to see people, and of course there will be the Caprizzio show (and maybe a new CD!) Matt and I are planning on not staying for the entire thing, but coming and going throughout the weekend.
And Monday's a holiday, at least for Matt and I. That makes the whole weekend doubly nice.
