Last year: Ah, well, the best laid plans...
It's Friday. Thank every god ever to have been worshipped on this or any other planet. This week has dragged like a water buffalo being taken to a lion's den to be ripped apart. It's sortof felt that way, too. The latest bad news, as I told the notify list yesterday, was that Dave, the head manager of my office who retired about two weeks ago, died late Wednesday night.
And to make matters worse, I actually don't have any work to do, despite the astonishing reduction in force. My project is waiting for some final fixes to the server, the final configuration for the database, and for my project manager to make all of his last-minute changes. But until those things actually happen, there's nothing much I can do. So I've been bringing Atalanta to work with me all week so I can at least look busy while I help put my dad's resume together.
(Someone explain this to me: My dad was one of the main people to accept resumes and decide who we interviewed. Why now is he having me clean his up for him? Surely he has a pretty good idea what people are looking for?)
At least the weekend promises to be amusing. We're having dinner with my parents tonight; tomorrow is Matt's 7th Sea game; and Sunday we're using the Super Bowl as an excuse to get together with some people and have chili. There will be at least two pots of chili, of course - the guys seem to think it reflects poorly on their manhood to eat chili that doesn't make their eyes water, whereas the girls don't like spicy food, and are primarily interested in an enjoyable flavor.
Which reminds me, we'll need to go to the grocery store soon for ingredients. Maybe even tonight, depending on how long we're at my parents'. I refuse to wait until late Sunday morning, when everyone else will have already ravaged the shelves.
I'm sorry I don't have much to say today. It's been a shitty week, and I'm just glad it's nearly over. (Oh, yeah - they'll be having a meeting today to give us the new organizational chart. Lots of potential for shittiness there.) Here's hoping next week is better.
