Last year: Becky stumbled back a few steps under the onslaught; my chair was flung back with the flood!
Well, this is going to be annoying. My new office shares a wall with the server room, and something in the server room is beeping at a constant, high pitch. The room is locked, of course, so I can't get in there to figure out what's causing it, much less turn it off. And it'll be at least half an hour befoe the IS people get here.
I was just about to complain that I haven't brought my CDs back to work, so I can't even drown the beeping out. Then I remembered that - duh! - I have my PowerBook, which has just about 24 hours of music on it in MP3 format, and I could listen to that.
Ah.... Much better.
Well, I did it. I went and bought my bike. Matt seems pretty dubious about the whole thing, but it's my money, and I like it. Isn't it pretty? I bought a helmet to match, with a dark grey top and red sides. (I actually had my eye on a shimmery blue helmet, but it cost quite a bit more than this one. Alas.) And a headlight and taillight so cars can see me, and a cable lock so I can use it to run up to the store.
And $6.95 for a kickstand. When did bikes start coming without kickstands? When I was a kid, our mothers would yell at us if we just dropped a bike over on its side instead of taking the agonizingly long two seconds to use the kickstand. Maybe that's it - a generation of kids who were fussed at for not using their kickstands grew up to design bikes that didn't have them so they could use that for an excuse.
My intention - as I told the notify list last night - is to go out whenever Matt goes out to play basketball or Ultimate Frisbee. Obviously, I'm not up to riding for the whole time he'll be gone just yet, but if I go out every time he does, I'll be up to it eventually, I'd think. Today after work, I want to take it on a real first ride. I rode it around the parking lot the other night when I tested it, and last night I rode it down to the end of our street and back just because, but I haven't really been on it much yet.
I think I'm either going to have to practice taking the wheel off, though, or hope I don't ever have to take it off again - we had to take it off last night to get it into Matt's van to get it home, and while it's very simple to do, it's not very easy, because my hands aren't really strong enough to release and re-connect the brake.
I went to the doctor yesterday afternoon to have him verify that I'm taping my finger correctly (he was a little surprised at the width of the tape I'm using, but it's all I've got) and ask him about this pain in my stomach. He poked and prodded, explaining for me the eight or so different things he thought it could possibly be, and eventually gave me a week's supply of Prevacid on the suspicion that stress (Stress? What stress?) might have caused my stomach to get a bit out of whack. He thinks a week of forcibly reduced acid production will set me back on track. Here's hoping...
Last night, I went to my bank's website to transfer some money from savings to checking to cover the bike, and I thought, "As long as I'm here, I'll check and make sure my paycheck came through."
I loaded up the statement and read through it... Hey! The last deposit was two weeks ago! Where was my paycheck? I loaded the statement for a different account, wondering if they'd gotten the wires crossed... No. No money. I was supposed to get paid! Direct deposit never failed me before! What happened??!?
I was working myself up into a full-scale panic when I remembered: It was Thursday. I get paid on Friday. Oops.
(Yes, it's there this morning.)
See you on Monday!
