Last year: Guess I'm just feeling introspective today.
Last night as we were sitting around the living room, Matt called my attention to the cat, sound asleep on the couch. "Isn't he cute?" he gushed.
"Awww...." I said. "It makes me want to just... wake him up!" I shook the cat. "Wake up! Wake up!" I've been doing this lately. I keep hoping that if I keep him from sleeping in the evening, he'll be more likely to sleep at night, thereby letting me sleep at night. So far, it hasn't worked very well.
Matt cuddled the cat. "Poor Spud," he sympathized. "Mommy is mean. You want to wake Mommy up early in the morning, don't you? Yes, you do! You want to wake up Mommy, but not Daddy!"
This morning, around 3:30, the cat woke us both up by knocking things off my nightstand. I was a little surprised that Matt woke up as well; usually he sleeps right through the cat's antics.
As we were getting up this morning, Matt gave me a hug. "I'm sorry the steeeenky cat woke you up this morning," he said sympathetically.
What I said was only the truth: "It was no worse than every other morning. You're only sorry because he woke you up, too." Matt looked so flummoxed at this I started to laugh.
"You think you are funny," he said with wounded dignity, "but you are Not."
This morning something caught my eye as I was walking across the kitchen. I stopped and looked more closely, certain I was imagining things, but I was not. There was a tiny green sprout in the middle of the planting bed. Just one - none of its sister pots had sprouted yet. I lifted the cover from the bed so I could read the label that told me which plant it was: Cucumber.
The cucumber seed packet had promised germination in 7 - 14 days. It's been four. This cucumber vine really wants to get going. Ah, well, since one keeps the strongest, healthiest plants for the actual garden, and since I only want one cucumber vine, I suspect it will get its wish.
