26 March 2001

Well, I had a pretty good weekend. Karen helped me clean up a poem/song I'd written for my Meade Hall character Kevil - a song that just happened to be about one of her characters, Elgara'a. I'm actually pretty proud of it, but I'm not posting it anywhere public until after Kevil presents the song to Elgara'a, which won't be for a few weeks.

Matt's 7th Sea game was Saturday evening, and despite the fact that Matt is in the middle of a cold and I'm at the tail end of one, we had a lot of fun. I think I managed to discombobulate him a little by using one of my characters' less useful non-combat skills in combat. At the time, I was a little annoyed that he didn't want to seem to give my idea a fair shake, but after the excitement wore off, I decided he was probably just too sick to really deal with it or really communicate to me what was possible.

Saturday night I watched the HBO movie Wit, which stars Emma Thompson as an English professor with advanced ovarian cancer. Emma Thompson is one of my favorite actresses - she's got great range. Wit was a good movie. Fantastic cinematography, some really nice techniques. Of course, it was fantastically depressing as well: a three-tissue movie, plus a good long cry on Matt's shoulder at the end. But parts of it were even funny, right up to the very end - which only served to make the drop to sad all the more impressive. It was a very good movie.

Sunday I spent in glorious sloth, except for doing some computer maintenance and the laundry. Sunday evening I went over to K.T.'s and we ate turkey (she'd seen it on sale and gotten a craving) and watched Anna and the King - another "chick flick" sad movie, this time lush and alien. I like Jodie Foster, too. She tends to be a little on the reserved side, but it was a reservation the role allowed.

I know, I know - an almost unprecedented wealth of movies for me! But wait! After I left K.T.'s, I came home and watched The Sopranos! (More cancer. Someone please reassure me the gods aren't sending me a sign.)

On the garden front, I noticed over the weekend that my squash sprouts are getting pretty enthusiastic - they're about to climb out of the plate they're in and attack the sink. I may wind up planting them next weekend, or even sometime this week. The cucumber is almost as excited, so I may make a trip to Lowe's for a climbing trellis for it this weekend. The tomatoes, being a little less sturdy, will have to continue to wait until I'm sure there won't be another frost. I may get one or two pot-planted, though.

And the columbine seedlings have sprouted - every last one of them, unlike the vegetables, which all had at least one pot that refused to sprout. The columbine is pretty frail, though, so it will stay inside for quite a while. Maybe even through the summer, though I'm not sure about that yet.

Work should be interesting today. With the Evil Project crushed (for the nonce, at least) I am currently without work. I expect that around 9:00 my supervisor will come in and tell me what my new project is... Chances are good it'll be a WinCE project, unfortunately. WinCE (pronounced "wince" with unerring accuracy in development circles) is notoriously difficult to develop with. I'd almost rather learn assembly.

Ah, well, we'll see how it goes. If nothing else, it'll be another skill to put on my ever-expanding resume.
