Last year: I learned a very important lesson yesterday.
Well, the meeting yesterday went fairly well. I got one step closer to understanding a fairly confusing process, and the customer has actually started to work with us and give us information. I suspect it has something to do with the difference between my way of asking and my manager's, but we won't go there. So we got back to the office around mid-afternoon, which was a welcome surprise, since I'd expected the meeting to run longer.
Matt and I were eating dinner last night when Kevin called. Matt answered the phone, so I don't know exactly what he said, but the upshot of the conversation was that K.T., on her way to her first training meeting for her new job, had been in a car accident. The car was totalled and K.T. was in the emergency room with what they believed was a broken ankle, along with assorted scrapes and bruises.
Well, we were relieved that it wasn't anything as serious as her last trip to the E.R., and dumbfounded at her bad luck. Kevin had said he thought she'd be in the hospital about another hour, so we decided to wait a bit and call her at home to see if she wanted company, or if she'd rather just take some painkillers and get some rest. (The hospital is about a forty-five minute drive from our house, so it wouldn't have made much sense for us to go visit her in the E.R.)
We called around 8, but they weren't home yet, so Matt left a message asking them to call us back when they got in, if it wasn't too late. Though if we'd known how much longer she'd really have been in the hospital, we could've gone down to visit. We finally went to bed around 11:30, and K.T. called at midnight.
Again, Matt took the call, but what he passed on to me (or at least, what I can remember through the sleep-fog) was that her leg was broken in five places, and she was going in for surgery today to have it all re-aligned properly. So everybody think happy thoughts for K.T. today!
What they're going to do without a car, I'm not sure. I'm desperately hoping the other guy was fully insured. I don't know if they have a rental car rider on their own insurance, but of course we'll offer to help any way we can. Luckily, Kevin has been getting rides to work from a co-worker anyway.
Speaking of rental cars, I'm in one today. My car is back in the shop to have the air conditioning repaired. The insurance adjuster is supposed to go by around nine to see if the damage could be attributable to last summer's accident, and then they'll get to work.
I wouldn't have bothered with the rental car except for two things:
One: After Matt's van hiccupped and refused to start last weekend, I want to make sure we have one reasonably reliable vehicle on hand. (Though the van has started perfectly fine ever since then. I suppose it might have been a fluke, but cars make me nervous.)
And two: I've got a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning, and while I'm sure Matt would have been willing to drop me off at the doctor on my way to work and then come back around 9 to drive me down to work, that would be a lot of time taken off from his schedule. It was just easier to get the rental car.
And I guess if we're going to need to go down to help K.T. and Kevin out this evening, then it'll be good I've got the rental.
I'm actually hoping - though it isn't likely - that they get my car fixed by the end of today. I'd really like to turn the rental in tomorrow morning and only pay for one day. But better safe than sorry.
Everyone think happy thoughts at my insurance adjuster so she'll agree to have the insurance pay to have my air conditioning fixed.
