Last year: So, it was a pretty good weekend, for me at least.
This morning, the gods spoke to me. It was shortly after two in the morning, and the gods said:
"Wake Up."
I muttered and pulled the blankets over my head.
"Wake Up Now!"
And they punctuated that with a lightning flash and a thunderbolt. So I woke up. And I had a little conversation with the gods that went something like this:
"Hey. I was sleeping, you know."
"Yea Verily, This We Know. Is Not Our Plan Good And Pleasing To Thee?"
"Plan? What plan? I'm a little slow - it's two in the morning and I just woke up."
"The Plan Is This: That Thou Remain Awake, And Speak Thee Unto Thy Comrades Until The Hours Of Darkness, And Receive Only Limited Sleep. And This Is The Plan, And The Plan Is Good."
"What? I mean, I know I've been staying up late a lot, recently, but-"
"And Hast Thou Not Been Well Despite Thy Lack Of A Full Night's Rest? Despite Thy Certainty That Thou Didst Indeed Require Such Rest?"
"Well, I do sometimes have a cup of coffee in the mornings to get me going now, but yeah, I've been pretty surprised at how well I've been getting by. Now that you mention it."
"And Yet! Lo, And Woe! Thou Didst This Very Evening Retire Before Midnight! Yea, Verily, We Say Unto You: Before Even Eleven-Thirty!"
"Well, we wrapped up the Hall and there wasn't any real reason to start a new session just then."
"Thou Didst Abandon Thy Comrades!"
"Well... Karen had to be up early - well, early for her - so she was already talking about going to bed early. And Ashby had stayed up all night last night-"
"We Know. He Is A Loyal And Trusting Follower, And Shalt Be Rewarded In His Time."
"Um... Right. So he was tired, and wanted to go to bed, himself."
"Thou Didst Tempt Him To Abandon The Plan For Sleep! Thou Couldst Have Persuaded Him To Stay! We Have Given You That Power!"
"But the way the Hall ended, it really wasn't possible to-"
"BAH! Do Not Dissemble! Thou Might Have Touched Upon The Second Plot, And Thou Knowst It!"
"Um, well, yes... But really, I just thought it might be good for me to get some sleep."
"We Are Saddened. Thou Trusts Us Not To Care For You. Verily We Are Saddened And Disappointed. Take Care Thou Makest Us Not ANGRY!"
"Okay, okay. I'll stay up late from now on! I promise!"
"Thou Hadst Better."
"Um... Can I go back to sleep now?"
"We Suppose."
No, really, there was a thunderstorm that lasted for at least 45 minutes and kept the sky lit so brightly I could've read a book if I hadn't been so busy talking with the gods.
It's what I get for thinking I might get more than five hours of sleep. And those damned gods woke the cat up extra-early, too.
