Last year: By the time we finished, Matt and I had a matched set of broken blisters on our thumbs, and vague hopes that we might actually eventually have some grass.
I've talked before about characters taking over and doing things I didn't expect them to do. I'm going to talk about it again now. Non-gamers... Sorry. Come back tomorrow.
It's kindof fun playing a low-powered character in a high-powered forum. For one thing, it's fairly easy. All I have to is spend a lot of time looking surprised, awed, and overwhelmed. No one expects you to leap into the midst of combat, or for that matter contribute significantly to just about any major plot.
So. Jaret and Lini and Bai and Lisl were getting geared up last night for Colleen's Underdark plot. And when a dark, forgotten goddess took over Lini briefly, Tarri and Sanriel scooted their little butts back across the room and opened their eyes wide, and begged them all to be careful and come home safely.
That was nerve-wracking enough for poor Tarri. She's still not so sure about this whole "good drow" thing. (Long story, I'm afraid, for those of you unfamiliar with the Hall.)
But then Tyl walked in and said she was going to need a volunteer to be bait for the slavers she's tracking. A young, pretty, vulnerable-looking volunteer.
...
Tarri thought about the time she was kidnapped. She thought about that happening to someone else, and knew she couldn't just let it go. She swallowed hard, and volunteered, along with Temire.
Now, I sortof expected Tyl to decide that since Temire's been trained in half a dozen or so martial disciplines, she was the safer candidate. But instead she decided that Temire's training would show through and make the slavers suspicious. It makes sense.
Dulcea - a new character - stepped up and volunteered. She's an expert swordswoman, but managed to look convincingly helpless to Tyl's scrutiny.
Tarri, in the back of my mind, was thinking pick her pick her pick her pick her. But Tyl decided to take them both, much to my surprise.
Even more to my surprise, despite the easy out, despite the obvious fact that both Lisl and Sanriel wanted her to take that out, she set her jaw and agreed.
So now I've got butterflies in my stomach for sweet little Tarri. The good news is that it's happening soon - tomorrow evening. Which is good, because I don't know how long I can handle this bundle of nerves.
Fictional characters, pfah.
