Last year: "Does this mean we're going to Ben and Jerry's?"

Is it the weekend yet? All I really want is some sleep.

It's turning into a regular thing on Wednesday evenings - Colleen comes over (with or without Carl) and we buy groceries and she cooks dinner, and then we all watch West Wing.

Last night it was shepherd's pie, a real favorite of mine. (As those who know my propensity for mixing foods together will no doubt have guessed.

The end of the evening wasn't nearly as good, though. Colleen and Carl left, and just about when I was beginning to think about heading to bed, the phone rang - their car had died, and they were stranded, stuck at a 7-11 about a third of the way home.

Well, I wasn't very well going to leave them stranded, so I told the people I was chatting with that I was going, along with a brief lament for the loss of sleep.

Kevin and K.T. volunteered to pick them up in my stead. I thought about it, and couldn't think of a reason why I shouldn't agree - the overall trip would be shorter for them (since they live between Colleen and Carl's home and the 7-11 where they were stranded) and they could both sleep in the next morning, so staying up late wasn't an issue.

So with thanks, I agreed, stayed up another fifteen minutes or so to chat, and then went to bed.

A little later, just as I was abou to fall asleep, Matt came in to tell me that on their way back, they'd hit a deer.

No one was hurt, and the car was only slightly dented, thank goodness. But K.T. was - obviously and understandably - shaken by the event.

And now, having spent the last forty-five minutes writing that, while alternating with staring blankly into space, I think I'll post this and go back to staring blankly into space. It seems that's all I'm good for this morning.

(Are you sure the weekend isn't here yet?)
