Last year: I sat back down with a thump!

I thought about voting on my way in to work this morning, but decided to leave it until tonight. I imagine the polls will still be crowded - we're having a race for governor in Virginia this year - but nowhere near as bad as last year.

(Yes, I'm aware that the proper word for it is a "gubernatorial" race, but I hate that word.)

Let's hear it for Big Brother!

The company I work for is going to close down the site through which we current receive all our internet access, and centralize things. That's all well and good in and of itself, but we've been told that in order to get to the internet from now on, we'll have to sign up for an "Internet Access Management" account.

According to an e-mail I got this morning, "Once this change has been made, you will be prompted for a Username/Password whenever you connect to an Internet site."

Note that says site, not session. Every. Single. Site. is going to require me to enter a username and password. They can't even disguise their snooping. And I'm only hoping they really mean "site" and not "page"... Can you imagine how vastly annoying that will be - entirely aside from the annoyance of being snooped - to have to enter a username and password with every frigging screen change???

There's no word yet, either, as to how, or whether, other internet services like e-mail, ftp, and telnet will be affected, so I can't say yet whether I'll have to change when I update this journal.

Our resident hacker is up in arms over this, and has sworn to find a way to circumvent the damn thing. He's promised, when he finds a solution, to share. This is absurd.

And I need to start looking for another job.
