Last year:

As Matt and I came out of the grocery store the other night, he muttered, "Now that's an ugly car."

We often mock other people's modes of transportation. It's one of our favorite pastimes. Our usual targets have horrible paint jobs, but occasionally we'll see something that looks like it had been manufactured by mentally unstable dingos.

I turned to look at the indicated vehicle, and stopped dead in my tracks.

When I was in high school, the ugliest car currently in production - in my humble opinion, of course - was the Honda CRX.

They were very popular little cars, but my beef against them was that they looked like someone had taken a perfectly good car and chopped the back of it off. It just looked... off balance.

You know those cartoons where some character gets an air hose stuck in their mouth, and the swell up like a balloon just before they fly around backwards for a while?

This monstrosity looked like someone had stuck an air hose in a CRX. The Pontiac Aztek looks - I kid you not - like the unholy mating of a minivan and an SUV with its rear end chopped off abruptly.

I couldn't stop staring at it. It was probably the ugliest car body I've ever seen. And unlike the CRX, it was too big to ignore.

Just for a lark, I decided to part my hair on the other side this morning.

Since junior high school, I've parted my hair on the right. Most people part on the left, I know, but I have an enormous cowlick in the front of my head that is best dealt with by splitting it in two with the part. And now my hair is trained that way.

But I've been playing around with my hair a bit lately. For the last couple of weeks, unless I was in a hurry, I've been using a part that doesn't go straight back - it angles diagonally across the top of my head and stops where a straight left-part would. That works out pretty well, and distributes my hair a little more evenly.

This morning, some whim seized me, and I put in the same diagonal part - but starting on the left and moving toward the right.

My hair is trained to go in the other direction, and it keeps falling into my face. I may wind up going into the bathroom in a little while and putting it back somewhere it's more comfortable.

But for right now, the unaccustomed difference is kind of fun.

(I know, I know, more than you ever wanted to know about my hair.)
