13 February 2002

The night before last, I went to bed at 10:30, was asleep before eleven, and slept straight through the night until my alarm sounded at six yesterday morning. And I hit the snooze three times, and it was mid-afternoon before I felt fully awake.

When I got home from work yesterday, I took an hour and a half nap. Not a very good nap, though. More dozing than sleeping; I woke up every five or ten minutes to check the clock.

I went to bed at around 11:30, and went to sleep shortly after midnight. I woke up at 1:40.

And again at 2:30.

And again at 4:20.

And again at 5:15.

From 5:15 until six, I was only dozing, because the cat came in and alternated between being snuggly, desperately craving attention, and knocking things off my dresser.

And yet... I feel far more rested today than I felt yesterday. After I had fed the cat and made my lunch, I didn't feel the overpowering urge to crawl back into bed. (Which is not to say I didn't feel the urge - just that it was manageable.) I didn't lean against the wall in the shower and doze for two minutes until the soap ran down my face into my eyes. I didn't sit down on the bed to get dressed and almost whimper because the blankets were still warm.

I got up. I fed the cat; packed my lunch; took my shower; picked out clothes; got dressed; combed my hair. I set the VCR to tape West Wing tonight. I took mail out to the mailbox, and put the trash and recycling bins on the curb. And I'm still at work almost five minutes earlier than I'd expected to be.

I don't know if my weird nap set the tone for the night, or if it was the result of finishing off a caffeinated soda just before going to bed, or what - but it seems to have done the trick.

But I think today I will avoid caffeine, and hope I get more sleep tonight.
