11 March 2002

It was kind of a nothing weekend. We didn't do much of anything. (Except I played on the Hall a lot, of course. Those of you who are surprised, please report to the back of the room for your dunce caps.) But in all truth, it felt good to do nothing.

We went out for dinner Friday night with Braz and Kris, and Saturday we went down to visit with K.T. for a few hours. Matt got out a little more - he went to play frisbee on Saturday afternoon, and he went to hang out with Colleen a couple of times.

(In a complete aside... Will someone please remind me to get some more turtlenecks so I can throw this one away? The damn tag itches.)

Rumor has it that I'll actually get to do some work this week. We'll see if it pans out true or not...

The voices in my head...Good news! I found another picture for Dawn, and this one is in the public domain, so I don't have to ask for permission. It's not perfect, of course, but I'm about 90% happy with it - which incidentally is far happier than I am with any of my pictures for Zoya.

I think the seed was planted last Wednesday, when we were attempting to watch the awful Othello. K.T. and I were talking about Kenneth Branagh, and how - despite being an excellent actor - he's really not a very attractive man, usually. Given how rarely K.T. and I agree on this sort of thing, it's always somewhat astonishing that we stand together on this - and for much the same reason, even: The man has no lips.

We even both agreed that he was quite sexy in Frankenstein, where he had a full mustache and beard to cover the lack of lips. But even there, the sexiness isn't really physical; it's in his intensity.

Anyway, I considered briefly whether Branagh's Iago would do for Dawn. It was pretty close - I'd never thought of Dawn as being particularly attractive - and Branagh's hair is only a shade or two dark, and his eyes are precisely the watery blue I'd envisioned for Dawn. But in Othello he has short hair, and Dawn's hair is shoulder-length. And while I can pretty easily doctor sketches and drawings and paintings in Photoshop, I quail at the thought of adding long hair in a photo headshot.

But the seed had been planted, and it bloomed on me this weekend. He had shoulder-length hair in Frankenstein. Even then, I had a lot of weeding to do. The picture I found was one of only two that suited, actually... But one was all I needed (and the other was a tiny black-and-white, barely big enough for a thumbnail).

So there we go: A picture for Dawn, and I don't have to sweat the permissions. (Speaking of permissions, I still haven't heard anything from the artist for the Dusk picture. As far as I'm concerned, until and unless she tells me to take it down, it stays up. Though I should add accreditation and a link, I suppose.)
