7 May 2002 Sorry I didn't write yesterday. I had my annual physical in the morning, and by the time I'd gotten to work, it was already eleven. The physical was... the physical. I'm sure you don't really want any more detail than that, do you? The doctor more or less skipped the "lose weight" lecture, since I'd lost three pounds (funny, since I can see three pounds' difference from day to day, really) and he also skipped the "you're running out of time to have a baby" lecture, for which I was grateful. One amusing moment: The nurse brought me back and had me get on the scale, and then she pulled up the little arm that measures height.
"I'm pretty sure I'm still five-four," I told her, amused. But their measuring stick needs adjustment, or I've hit a late-life growth spurt, because I came in at five-four and three-quarters. "My husband is six-two," I told her. "I don't think an extra three-quarters of an inch is going to make that much difference." I'm not really looking forward to tomorrow. From nine until noon - at least - I'll be stuck in a code review. That is, I and three or four other programmers are going to lock ourselves into a room, trade code, and critique. It's a formal process, with a moderator and a note-taker and stuff. It's actually very helpful in finding bugs and streamlining code, but ohmylord is it tedious. And then I'm supposed to have another meeting in the afternoon, to talk about a new project that I'll be adding to my efforts. The new project sounds reasonably interesting, and it's good to know they have work for me to do, but after a whole morning of code review, I'm not going to be in any kind of mental shape for anything but drooling. That's not even counting this morning's staff meeting. I can only hope that one will go quickly, though I don't have much hope.
So, voila! An impromptu wedding. I imagine they'll have another celebration later. There's only so festive a bride can be when her little sister has been kidnapped and her big brother's had a curse laid on him. Not to mention the much more overarching problem of this cult attempting to bring back to life their dead god... It puts a crimp in the festivities, to say the least. |
