5 July 2002 I didn't take my camera with me to the fireworks last night, so I thought I'd give you one of Mother Nature's equivalents for the picture of the day today: Our next-door neighbor has about four clusters of these gorgeous lilies. I want my own, but first I have to figure out where I'm going to plant them. (Matt's so picky...) I finally weeded the front mulch bed yesterday. It looks much better now, except for the spot where I couldn't uproot the crabgrass. What I should do today is spray the remains with weedkiller. For that matter, I've got a container of stuff in the garage that's supposed to kill weeds and fertilize grass at the same time; I should hook up the hose and spray that around, too. But getting all the weeds out left me with aching thighs and shoulders, so we'll see how motivated I can manage to be this afternoon. (Especially given that the weather isn't getting any cooler anytime soon.) I just keep adding things to my list that never quite seem to get done... The heat and humidity killed me yesterday, though. I've always, always hated being hot. But being hot and then having 85% humidity dumped on top of it... Ugh. I was threatening to bite people if they so much as touched me, when we were waiting for the fireworks to start. You'd think, as humid as it's been, that I wouldn't get dehydrated so fast. But after weeding yesterday, and then on the walk back to the car after the fireworks, I got dizzy and wobbly in the knees, which is a sure sign of it for me. You know I'm dehydrated when I actually get up after I've gone to bed and go downstairs for more water. Still, we had a pretty good day yesterday. Matt and I slept in, then lounged around for most of the day (except for the weeding thing). K.T. and Kevin came over early and we had hot dogs and baked beans and watermelon for dinner. And then we drove over to the College - we parked on campus and walked into Colonial Williamsburg. There was much exclamation about how there was no way we could be college student again, running from class to class. We eventually found a spot and set up our chairs. There was some concern that the large tree nearby was going to be in the way, but we didn't feel like moving any further. As it turns out, we couldn't have picked a better spot. The tree never once got in our way, and the fireworks were gorgeous. I wished I'd taken my camera - but then, I'd probably have just felt grumpy about carrying it the half-mile or so back to the car, so maybe it's for the best. And now I'm at work again. A mini-mini week, Monday and Friday all rolled up into one. Half the office is taking the day off, though, including my supervisor, so I don't expect to have to do too much work. (Though apparently I'm still dehydrated. Without even really thinking about it, I've killed another half a bottle just writing this entry.) Anyway, I'm expecting to make some good progress on my world map and country descriptions and such. That'll be nice. I've been trying to get some stuff done there for a while now. |
