3 September 2002

Gosh, I love long weekends.

I even - hold on to your hats! - managed to get something productive accomplished! I cleaned off the bill desk, in preparation for eventually moving most of its contents to a new desk downstairs. I'd thought about starting to pack up comics to be gotten rid of, too, but - as predicted - gave it a miss.

My mom's birthday was Sunday, so we met up with my folks for dinner at Samurai. (Mmmm.... Hibachi.) And they were out of plum wine, so I had sake with my dinner. I haven't had sake since college. (It's so much better warm...)

Yesterday Matt and I went down to meet up with K.T. We went out to lunch at Don Pablo's, and then went back to her place to watch a double-feature: El Mariachi and Desperado. By the time that was over, we had to hightail it home for the Hall.

(By the way, for those of you not on the mailing list, I did post a late entry on Friday - and then a corresponding entry on the blog.)

So. Here I am, back at work after a three-day weekend. It didn't really feel like three days, and I'm not really ready to be back at work, but three days is better than two! The next holiday for my office is Thanksgiving.

I was reading through last September's entries, which is something I usually do at the beginning of the month, and I stumbled - almost literally - across my post-Sept-11 entry.

When she opened her eyes, it was September again...

I knew it was coming up on September, but it hadn't really occurred to me that it had been almost a whole year since that. It doesn't feel like a year. And suddenly I'm anxious. There will be "retrospectives" and "commemorations" and other media-corrupted words that boil down to trying to make us re-live the horror.

I don't want to re-live the horror. I was quite horrified enough at the time. I don't want to watch the footage again. I don't want to hear tearful stories about death and heroism.

You know what I'd like to see? I'd like to see a network not do a fancy memorial. It would be really cool if, perhaps, a network would instead air a full minute of silence at the top of each hour, without pictures. Just the words, in script, across the screen: In memoriam...

Won't happen. Television today is all about movement and satisfying Americans' four-second attention span.

I think I'll stay away from the television most of next week. Even more than I already do.
