23 September 2002

Friday, September 20th, about 3am, Colleen and Carl's son Patrick made his entrance to the world. So Friday evening, Matt and I went over to the hospital to pay our respects.

Colleen, Carl, and Patrick

Colleen was a little bit spacey - you'd have thought she'd been awake for 36 hours straight, spent half of them in labor, been encouraged to push before she was fully dialated, had major surgery, and then been drugged half out of her mind. Can't imagine what would give you that impression. All things considered, she was doing quite well. Carl was doing much better, of course, and obviously quite besotted with his son.

Patrick, on the other hand, had not yet been convinced of the merits of leaving the womb, and was rather cranky about the whole affair. Actually, he was pretty good-tempered considering that the whole time I held him (about half an hour before Matt took a turn) he had a bad case of the hiccups. Hell, I get cranky if I have the hiccups for half an hour, and I'm a grown-up with recourse to action.

Anyway, aside from some understandable fussiness, he was a cute little kid.

Another September, another baby. Maybe next year it'll be me. Who knows?

Saturday I went to a baby shower for a woman in my office who's due in about a month. Babies, babies, babies!

Matt's up in New Jersey this week. Poor Matt. I'm not harboring a lot of hope that the "emergency" that he got called up for will actually turn out to be all that urgent. Still, I'm hoping to take advantage of the quiet to get some writing done.

After some mental munging, K.T. and I finally settled on Brothers In Arms as the working title for our novel. I don't think either of us is completely happy with it, but we liked my suggestion, Legacy, even less. I think the current plan is to hope we can get it published and that the editor will pick a new title for the book, so we can bitch that we didn't get to pick it.

Thank goodness we're not giving titles to the individual chapters.
