14 February 2003

Well, here I am, in my new office. I'm still settling in, of course.

On the wall across from me, there's a map of the United States. Specifically, it details the locations of military medical facilities in the United States and U.S. territories - left over from a military hospital project that the office had nearly ten years ago. I'm going to take it down and replace it with my two Escher posters.

There isn't really a good place to hang my wall planning calendar. The one section of wall that's convenient for me to write on is half-blocked by a whiteboard that's screwed into the wall. I found a spot for it on another wall, but now I can't read what I've written on the calendar without getting up and going over there. So I think the calendar is going to get scrapped and replaced with a desk calendar. Or - horror of horrors! - I might actually start using the Outlook calendar.

And by all that's holy, I need to get a floor lamp so I can turn off the overhead fluorescent ones. Fluorescent light gives me a headache after a couple of hours. Yesterday, I found myself going back to my old office and shooting the breeze with Random just to get a break from the light.

But all in all, I'm pretty pleased with the new arrangement. I have an actual desk now (as opposed to a table with a single drawer) which means I have places to stash things that I didn't have before. Very handy.

As for the job itself... It looks like it could be interesting, actually. At least, it could be interesting, once I get through reading this awful stack of documentation...

Happy Valentine's Day! And if you don't have a significant other with whom to Valentine, don't get into a snit. Do something for your friends.

Just as I was writing that last bit, a woman in my office came around to put a kiddie valentine and some candy on my desk - she's doing the whole office. So there's an idea for you to start out with.

Me, I'm going to go fix myself some breakfast and (sigh) get back to reading documents. Once today is done, I've got a three-day weekend ahead of me. Whoo!
