29 April 2003

So, very little actual work was on the docket for yesterday, despite a couple of impending deadlines, so I took the couple of extra hours I had left over from working late Friday and went home early. I sat on the couch and drank tea and read comics until I finally started feeling a bit tired, and then I tried to take a nap.

"Tried" is the operative word. I curled up on my pillow and started to drift off...

"Mrrrrow?" Where is everyone?

Sometimes, if we just wait, he'll figure it out for himself.

"Mrrrrrow?" There used to be people here!

I lifted my head to look down at the cat beside the bed. "Come on." I snapped my fingers a couple of times. "I know Daddy always picks you up, but I'm not moving that far."

Eventually, he jumped up on the bed. I petted him a couple of times, but he shook me off, looking around expectantly. Where's Daddy? He searched all over the bed, then, not finding Matt, jumped down again and wandered off.

I put my head back down and tried to go to sleep.

"Mrrow? Mrrow? Mrrrrrrrow!" Daddy! Where are you? What has Mommy done with you?

I tried to bury my head under the pillow. "He'll be home soon, I promise..."

He jumped back up on the bed, just in case he'd missed something before. This time, apparently, he decided that the lesser of us would suffice, and curled up by my side.

Not five minutes later, the front door opened to admit Matt. The cat sat up and bolted down the stairs. DADDY!!!!!!

That's about the point at which I gave up trying to nap.

I did, however, go to bed just about immediately after the Hall last night. My cold isn't gone, but it's receded enough that I was able to breathe all night. So aside from the now par-for-the-course trips to the bathroom (which I can do more or less sleepwalking) I got to sleep all the way through the night.

That felt nice, let me tell you.

And now I'm much sleepier today on 7 1/2 hours of sleep than I was yesterday on 3 1/2. And my office is freezing. I think I will go check the thermostat, and make myself a little pot of tea to have with my breakfast, and then I will see about the work that has to be done before tomorrow's deadline.
