Well. Yesterday. I spent most of the day frantically trying to finish reviewing some 320 pages of documentation that had been done so quickly that it was inexcusably sloppy. Right at the end of the day, as I was bracing to work late, word came down from On High: The manager was not happy with the timetable and that the particular project's manager hadn't had a change to look at the documentation, so we were going to delay the customer a few days. I wanted to stalk into his office and give him a withering glare and a "NOW you tell me?" But I was already running about fifteen minutes after my usual quitting time, so instead I merely booked it home. Around 2:30 in the afternoon, Kevin called to tell me K.T. had woken up at o-dark-thirty with another terrible awful asthma attack, and she was back in the hospital. In ICU, even, though he'd gotten the impression that had more to do with available beds than the actual seriousness of her condition. I'd gone to bed when he logged in to IRC later last night, but Matt was still up. She's okay, and they're supposed to be moving her out of ICU today. Matt and I are going to go visit after we do our chore for the day. On the bright side, I finally got around to calling the local day-care centers yesterday. Of the seven that were listed in the phone book that were actually in Williamsburg and not religiously affiliated, one had shut down, and one did not take infants. The other five all take infants at six weeks or earlier, and only one had a significant waiting list. One place wanted to schedule an appointment for Matt and I to come in and look around; the others all said, "Oh, just come anytime we're open." And the prices were all more or less the same. There was a $20/week difference between the lowest and highest. The thing to find out, of course, is whether they'll offer a discount if I'm working from home part-time and only have to take the baby in to day-care three days a week. But you know, between being frazzled and worried, yesterday could have been a lot better... Onward. Happy May Day, everyone. And Happy Birthday to K.T., though it seems kind of doubtful at the moment. |
