7 July 2003

The holiday weekend was all about Ups and Downs. But, happily, more Ups than Downs.

Up: As an apology for missing their internet order, the manager of K.T. and Kevin's grocery store gave them four T-bone steaks. So we had steak instead of hot-dogs for our Fourth of July.

Up: The AD&D game K.T. put together for us was fun and loot-a-licious.

Down: We didn't find the secret door that led to the big treasure.

Up: Matt and I picked a name for the baby! (Well, we both took the names we had narrowed it down to and ranked them according to the order we like them, and it turned out - luckily enough - that we had the same first choice. So, no-brainer.)

Down: (at least for some) Matt wants to keep the name a secret for a while. I'm not entirely sure why - heck, I'm not sure he knows exactly why - but since that's what he wants, that's what we'll do. I had a funny conversation with my mom about it:

Me: We finally picked a name!

Mom: Oh, wonderful! What is it?

Me: Matt doesn't want to tell anyone just yet. He wants to keep it a secret.

Mom: Oh. So what is it?

Me: Mom!

Mom: I won't tell him you told me! I won't even tell your father!

Me: Yes, you will. You're even worse at keeping secrets than I am.

Mom: Well... yes. So what is it?

I did not give in and tell her. Heck, I managed to avoid telling her for three months that we were going to start trying to have a baby, and for most of a month I managed to keep from her the news that I was pregnant - though it kind of worked to my advantage that she was in the hospital for half that month. I think I'll be able to manage keeping the name from her for a month.

And in case it isn't obvious, we were just being silly in the comments of his blog post.

Down: It was very, very hot all weekend.

Up: Matt and I managed to get a lot of errands run, including getting a wedding present for a friend of ours who's getting married in a couple of weeks, and buying a baby-sling and some clothes from the consignment shop near my parents', and stopping at Babies R Us to get my rocking chair.

Up: I actually managed to get in not one, but two nights in a row of more than eight hours' sleep! I'm getting pretty good at sleeping sitting up, which doesn't make my hips hurt nearly so much as lying down. I can sleep in an upright position now for two hours or more, which provides just enough relief that I can then lay back down for another hour or so.

Down: Sleeping sitting up makes my hands all swollen, and my knees stiff.

Up: Dad had enough free time Sunday afternoon to help me pick the rocking chair up from the Babies R Us and drive it up to Williamsburg.

Down: Did I mention it was hot this weekend? Yeah. While Matt and Dad were assembling the rocking chair, I came to the realization that no, it wasn't just me, the house was too warm. Our air conditioning was broken.

Up: Second Street has a new salad that's very tasty. (Well, we weren't going to stay in to eat!)

Down: Our Lamaze class covered C-sections last night, which was just a little bit scary. And the teacher gave us some information that I'm almost positive is wrong, though I'm going to have to check with my doctor and/or the hospital staff to confirm my suspicion.

Up: Out of something like desperation, when we got home from Lamaze class, we tried turning the air conditioning back on. I think we were hoping that it would at least give us a psychosomatic aid in sleeping. But it did better than that; it turned right back on and started blowing nice cool air, and I woke up at about 2:30 in the morning to the realization that I was chilly. Worried that the thermostat was broken and it didn't know when to stop blowing, I got up and went downstairs to check on it, and nudged the thermostat up a couple of degrees. A few seconds later, it obediently turned itself off. And when I was making our lunches this morning at 6, it turned itself right back on.

(Of course, there's now a dilemma - do we still pay to have the repair people come out and look at it, even though they may not find anything? Or do we hope it was just a fluke and risk it happening again in a couple of days?)

Up: The rocking chair is comfy enough to sleep in. It doesn't help with the swelling in the hands or the stiff knees, but it doesn't make them worse. And I don't have to spend nearly as much energy to get out of bed and walk to the nursery to collapse into the chair as I was spending on trying to get my pillows and body re-arranged. (And if Matt had woken up at 5:30 and come into the nursery, he probably would've gone looking for his camera. I'd gotten chilly again and snuggled under our Winnie-the-Pooh baby blanket, because that's what I could reach without moving too much.)

Down: I'm back at work now...

Up: ...but my boss is on vacation, so I'm left more or less to my own devices for most of the next three weeks. Whoo!
