Yesterday was the last day of Bob and Deb's vacation here in Williamsburg, so of course they came over after dinner to spend the evening with us.

Correction. They came over after dinner to spend the evening with Penny. Matt and I were more or less incidental, except that they wanted to take a family portrait snapshot of the three of us.

Matt's dad is quite obviously smitten. Penny was taking a bottle when they arrived, and he sat and watched while she finished it. And he watched while I burped her. And then when she got fussy, he very willingly took her and cuddled her and walked around the living room until she calmed down and fell asleep on his shoulder. And then he sat down and watched her sleeping on his chest. We took her back to convince her to eat something before bed, and he hovered and took pictures.

As they were hugging us all goodbye and Matt and I were promising to see them at Thanksgiving or in January, depending on how soon the pediatrician will green-light travel, he said, "I'm already anxious to see her again."

I think Matt is not the only man wrapped tightly around Penny's tiny finger.

Last night was a little rough on sleep. Penny fell asleep at 7 in Bob's arms, and slept until about 9, when Matt and I had to use a cold, wet washcloth on her face to wake her up enough for pictures and a bottle. She dropped off more or less immediately after finishing the bottle, and Matt put her to bed after Bob and Deb left.

We stayed up puttering around a little longer, and then Matt watched an inning of the Cubs/Marlins game, and then we went to bed around 10:30 and slept soundly until 2:30, when Penny woke up.

Of course, having been asleep for most of the previous seven or so hours, Penny was ready to wake up and party. (If only we could get her to put off going to sleep until about 10, without making her into the World's Angriest, Fussiest Baby in the meantime...) I got to go back to bed and doze, but I got up after half an hour when I heard her complaining that she needed more than the measly four ounces of formual she'd already taken.

Matt finally got her in the crib and quiet around 3:30 - but then I just couldn't seem to get back to sleep. Every little grunt from Penny's room brought me awake. I woke up at 4. And at 5. At 5:15, she had a five-minute stretching and grunting fit that made me positive she was about to wake up, but she didn't.

At 5:30, she made some gurgling noises that, when they stopped, made me wonder if she were silently choking on her own spit-up. (Oh yes, the Mutant Worrybrain has returned, bigger and better and stronger than ever before!) So I got up to check on her. She was, of course, sleeping peacefully.

And, of course, having only slept for about two and a half hours, she was not in the slightest bit interested in waking up at six. But Matt and I have schedules to keep, so I jostled her into waking up, and nearly fell asleep again myself as she nursed.

Yeah, it's going to be a fun day. At least my boss is out and there isn't anything really pressing on my desk.
