Things are going to get exciting here, pretty soon! K.T.'s doctor had scheduled her to begin the induction process this morning, starting with a "ripening" for her "nailed shut" cervix. He thought that if she didn't go into labor right away, she'd have the baby Tuesday or Wednesday.

But last night, around 5:30, my phone rang.

"Hey... Water breaking is one of those things you're supposed to go immediately to the hospital for, isn't it?"

"Uh, yeah."

"Okay. Then we're going. See you in a couple of days."

For those of you who might not know... If you're having the baby in a hospital (instead of at a home birth) then you have your baby within 24 hours of the water breaking, one way or another. (After 24 hours, the risk of infection to the infant increases dramatically. If the baby hasn't arrived within about 20 hours, they'll start prepping for a C-section.)

So, I should have a call from Kevin sometime today, probably before I get home from work, but certainly before the Hall. (I charged up my cell phone last night, just to make sure I wouldn't miss it.)

More news as events warrant. Keep an eye on the blog.

So Penny had her 2-month checkup on Friday. She's up to 12 pounds - just shy of 12 1/2. And she's grown to 22 1/2 inches long. The doctor said she's in more or less perfect health (aside from perhaps a little cold) - though she's a bit on the chubby side, and while she's still well within normal parameters, we might want to make sure she's actually hungry when we feed her, and not just wanting to chew on something.

That'll get easier when she starts to gain the ability to pick things up and chew on them herself. In the meantime, we have a healthy, happy baby.

And then the doctor proceeded to make her a very unhappy baby by giving her the first round of her immunizations. Four shots, two in each thigh. There was a lot of screaming and crying. Matt and I were nearly beside ourselves, and I felt so bad that I took her back to work with me.

That was a mistake. She slept for most of the afternoon, but then woke up around 3:30 and was still in enough pain to start screaming again. It took me nearly an hour to get her calmed down, and I think that was more because she'd tired herself out than because she was actually calmed.

Next time, I think we may just take the rest of the day off and go home. It's not likely to stop her from screaming any more, but at least I won't be disturbing other people in the office or feeling guilty about work I should be doing.
