9 December 2003

Well, today could've gotten off to a smoother start.

At 4:00, Penny woke up. It's easier if she wakes up earlier - so we can go back to sleep for a decent amount of time - or later - so I can just get up and have done with it - but it's not like we can tell her that. So we got up.

Matt changed her diaper while I fixed a bottle. Usually she starts getting a little fussy (she woke up because she was hungry, after all!) but this morning she was smiling and happy. Cute baby. Yay, cute baby! Matt got set up in the rocking chair with her and the bottle, and I went back to bed.

As usual, I didn't fully go back to sleep. I dozed, waiting for the sounds of him putting her back in her crib and then coming back to bed. I heard the rhythmic thumps of burping, and the floor creaks. The light went out, and Matt was back in bed.

Then she started fussing. We sighed, and Matt got up again and trudged back into the nursery.

"Oh, my GOD."

Penny had spit up. And not just spit up - that in itself barely rates comment anymore - but somehow had managed to spit up so that it covered her whole face.

No wonder she was pissed.

Matt held her in the bathroom while I took a damp washcloth and cleaned goop off her eyes and from the insides of her ears and off the back of her head. Once she could open her eyes again, Penny resumed her happy mood.

I changed the sleeping pad in the crib, and then went back to bed while Matt rocked her to sleep.

Or... tried. Every time he put her down, she started crying. And usually had another spitup, though nothing so impressive as the first one.

At five, I gave up trying to sleep and came to get her. Matt went back to bed while I took Penny downstairs. I checked e-mail and played on Neopets while Penny slept - restlessly - in my arms.

At six-thirty, I figured that if Matt wasn't going to get up and take a shower, then I would, so I took her back upstairs. The instant I moved her from reclining in my arms to an upright position on my shoulder, she spit up. And when I put her in the crib, her eyes popped open and her lower lip stuck out and she started to cry.

She's got a cold, for sure - I won't go into any more detail of her symptoms, and you're welcome. But the daycare place might decide to send her back home. And I'm hoping that the new tire for my car will come today, since it didn't come yesterday.

And I've got other errands to run, and there's a document at work that has to go out by the end of the day, so I may or may not have to go back into the office...

I'm thinking today is not going to be the most restful day I've ever had.

Just a hunch.
