2 February 2004

Well, and here we are in February.

It was a pretty standard weekend. We went to visit my folks. Matt upgraded Dad's computer for him while the rest of us chatted and played with the baby (look for pics and a movie in the photo album sometime soon). Mom fed us dinner, and I got my brother to show me some drawing techniques, and I sympathized with his wife on the headache of house-shopping.

Grandmom Luck and Penny

I asked my mom if I could borrow one of the pictures from my baby album - I've got a similar picture of Penny, and I thought it would be fun to scan the old picture in and post the two side-by-side. But Mom sent me home with the whole album and said I could keep it. So I may pick out a handful or so of pictures to scan in and post in my album. Some of them are pretty funny.

Sunday was lazy and slow. Matt and I sat around the house and didn't do much of anything except the laundry and taking care of Penny. I did go grocery shopping, and did some preparation cooking for the week, but that didn't take very long, all told.

Reading the comics

So today I'm starting the Atkins diet. Matt's going on it with me. I told him he didn't have to - that his breakfasts and lunches could be the same as always, and it would be very easy to just add sides of rice or potatoes to whatever I'm planning to make for dinner. That's what my parents do, with Mom on Atkins and Dad on a low-cholesterol diet. But Matt wants to lose a little weight (not as much as I have to lose, of course, but some) so he's on the diet with me.

We'll see how well it works; Atkins relies pretty heavily on eggs, especially for breakfast, and Matt hates eggs. So he's breakfasting on sausage.

Well, the "induction" phase is supposed to last a minimum of two weeks, so we'll give it that long, anyway. At the end of two weeks, if Matt can't stand it, we may re-evaluate and re-adjust.

(Of course, as fast as people typically lose weight in the induction phase of Atkins, I wouldn't be surprised if Matt was pretty close to his weight-loss goal by the end of it anyway.)

In the meantime, I appreciate his support.

I'll try not to obsess about it here too much. I know, if there's anything more tedious than a parent's journal, it's a dieter's.
