I have miscalculated.

Because of my travel last week, I had a few "extra" hours on my timecard. Since I'm salaried and don't get paid overtime, I thought I would take off early yesterday to make up the extra time.

But I had forgotten that there is a huge meeting going on in our office today - in the conference room right across the hall from me, of course. Which means that I'll probably have to keep my door shut all day and make sure my music plays quietly, and... Bleah.

I should have waited and taken the extra time today.

We attempted to put Penny back on solid food (well, "solid" food - baby food is pretty mushy) last night. Much to my relief, she jumped right back into the routine for her cereal, opening her mouth wide and grinning at me between bites.

She was much more dubious about the carrots, but she'd only been eating carrots for a few days before she got sick the first time, so it may just take another few days for her to get used to them again.

Assuming she doesn't get sick again (knock on wood) we may get adventurous and try sweet potatoes this weekend.

I know, I know - the excitement is almost too much.

I know I promised I wouldn't talk endlessly about my diet, but I had a surprise this morning.

I've only been on the diet for three days. It hasn't been too bad so far. I get a little hungry in the afternoon and early evening, but not horribly so - and one expects to be at least a little hungry on a diet. I am, after all, not quite meeting my body's maintenance requirements in order to force it to burn excess fat, and when you don't meet your maintenance requirements, your body tries to nudge you along. Fair enough.

And I'm cooking more involved recipes than I usually do, but - at least so far - I don't really mind it. If nothing else, it's nice to have different recipes to try, and it's nice to have something to do to take my mind off that nagging bit of hunger.

So, given my relatively low level of hunger, coupled with the knowledge that you typically lose some water weight in the first few days of a diet, I'd expected to have lost a couple of pounds already.

What I didn't expect, when I got on the scale this morning, was to have lost four pounds.

Now, the scale doesn't always weigh perfectly accurately. Sometimes if I step off and then back on, I get a different response.

But still. Wow.

I can do this.
