26 April 2004

It could have been worse - it can always be worse - but that was not the relaxing weekend I had hoped for.

Penny seems to be mostly over being sick, but she's still being very finicky about food - and yet, at the same time, is well enough to be really hungry. So she's been pretty fussy, which always makes time go slower.

And there's a new, less-than-adorable trick: She'll push the bottle out of her mouth and then start crying, and keep crying and pushing it away until Matt or I force it back into her mouth, at which point she'll grab it like a long-lost friend.

And she threw up several times Saturday night and Sunday morning. Twice right on me. Oh, the joys of parenthood.

But we're done with the stupid antibiotic run, and she hasn't had a fever for several days, so we sent her in to daycare today with some pretty specific feeding instructions. I hope she's okay. I just want her to get better.

One of the gifts Matt gave me for our anniversary was the Ornamental Grass Kit from Running Press. (I don't know why, but these little tiny kits and books appeal to me almost absurdly.)

The little book says that the grass requires little to no sun, so I brought it to work and planted the seeds last week.

On Friday, I still hadn't seen any shoots, so I figured they'd probably stall out over the weekend - as there would be not only no sun, but not even any light - and that they might sprout sometime this week.

Imagine my surprise this morning, then, when I turned on my office light to reveal a whole bunch of little grass shoots, most of them a good inch tall!

They're a little pale, but that's to be expected (no light = no photosynthesis = no green); I expect they'll darken a little over the next couple of days, as they sit directly under my desk lamp.

Funny how little it takes to make me happy. I finally remembered (after some prodding from my mom) to hunt up a battery and bring my TimeSphere clock to work with me, and that will make me happy, too. It's an unbelievably cool clock; I can't believe I've taken this long to remember it.

Maybe tomorrow I'll remember to bring my camera to work with me, and I'll inflict on you pictures of my grass and my awesomely cool clock.

(Oh, the anticipation!)
