Bit late today; I had a dentist appointment. All three of you who noticed: Sorry. I'll probably post late tomorrow, too, as "my" employee is starting, and I'll be spending most of the morning showing her the ropes and introducing her to people. Just out of curiosity, I checked my hard drive space this morning, and was appalled to discover that it had dropped below 1Gig, to about 750M. The idea of measuring free space in megs rather than gigs was pretty horrifying. (Oh, how far we have come... Once upon a time, I danced in glee over my shining new computer with a whopping 256M of space! We won't even talk about my first computer, with its 40M. That's not even sufficient video memory, these days... Whatever happened to "doing more with less"?) Anyway, since I was going to be sitting around the house for forty-five minutes or so until it was time to go to the dentist, I spent some time combing through my files, eliminating ones I don't need or want. I desperately need to reorganize my documents; they're scattered all over and in no kind of useful order at all. I found the beginnings of a cyberpunkish story that I'd started only the gods know when. I only vaguely even remember the title. When I read it, I didn't remember writing any of it. But it's definitely in my style, and now that I've read it, I remember clearly the concept I was playing with. Isn't that peculiar? And in case you're wondering, I did eventually get my free space up to about 1.2G, so I feel a little less panicky about it. Still, I should probably burn a bunch of MP3s to CD or something. Matt taunted me with links to large and inexpensive hard drives, but I've decided that the reward I'm promising myself for reaching the next big weight-loss goal is a new computer, so it seems a little silly to buy a new hard drive with a new computer (theoretically) only about a year away. And speaking of weight loss, I got on the scale this morning, and it told me that I'd lost about ten pounds. Since yesterday. But then I remembered that Penny was playing with the scale this morning, and it's a digital scale that needs to be re-zeroed when it's been moved or jostled. I re-zeroed it, and then stepped on it again. A 0.2-pound loss. Less exciting, but much more believable. And while I was writing that, the daycare place called Matt to tell him that Penny's got a fever, and would he please come pick her up. She actually had a lowgrade this morning, but I thought it was just a teething fever. Guess not. If she's sick for more than a day, that's going to throw a lovely monkey wrench into our weekend. A sick (and therefore probably fussy) baby is not going to make things more fun and happy for our cookout. Not to mention other small children who will be present and whose parents would probably appreciate it if we didn't pass on whatever Penny's got. At the same time, Karen's driving down from New York, and I've got stacks of hamburgers and hotdogs and buns in my fridge, and I really don't want to cancel... BAH. Everyone think happy thoughts for Penny, so she'll be over whatever it is by tomorrow, okay? Thanks. |
