30 June 2004

Well, the dizzy feeling was gone by the time I left for my eye doctor appointment, and it didn't come back, so I'm just going to chalk it up to accidently eating some wacky mold or something and move on.

The eye doctor's was a scream, though. My actual doctor was sick, so they'd called in a colleage from freaking Norfolk to cover for him. So they were running late. I wish they'd told me that when I checked in; as it was, I was pretty irritable about being kept waiting for more than half an hour when I was the second appointment of the day.

The colleague was extremely grouchy, too. Which is not to say that he acted unpleasantly to me - he was very nice and polite and everything. But he disparaged my doctor's office - the location, the layout, and the equipment. ("This instrument is... adequate. At my office, what we've got is the gold standard. It's much faster.") He was rude to the staff. And he decided that my doctor had misdiagnosed my vision. He was not very successful at concealing his horror at the fact that my doctor hadn't dilated my eyes to examine the retina at my last visit.

On the other hand, he seemed to know what he was talking about.

So I'm not altogether sure how I feel about the new prescription. He decided that I had been misdiagnosed as being nearsighted, when in fact, I'm slightly farsighted, and I've been over-correcting. So the new glasses, when they come in, will be for farsightedness, and because they're the reverse of what I'm used to, he warned that they could give me problems - headaches or nausea - for a few days.

He said that since my prescription was so weak, I could try using them only when I'm on the computer or reading, and take them off otherwise. And that if they were still bothering me after a week or 10 days, to come back and have them re-evaluated.

Let's see... about a week to get the new glasses, and then a couple of weeks to get them broken in... Yeah, I may well be back at the doctor's office by the end of July.

I'm not throwing out my old glasses right away, at least. (Though if it turns out that the doctor was grouchy but right, and I adjust well to the new prescription, I may get a second set of lenses put into these frames, and then I could have two pairs of working glasses. I could make fashion choices!)

It's official. On Saturday, a woman I work with is going to come over to our house and babysit Penny for a few hours so Matt and I can go out for a movie and a meal. An actual date! Just us! Alone! For three or four whole hours!

We're going to see Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Haven't decided where we're eating yet.

A date! I'm so excited! Whatever will I wear!?
