24 January 2005

I went to the doctor on Friday afternoon, mostly at Matt's request, to make sure my cough wasn't anything serious.

The doctor said it wasn't anything to worry about, but she prescribed me an inhaler to reduce the inflammation in my lungs and some cough syrup to help me get to sleep at night.

The cough syrup, amusingly enough, turned out to be the exact same stuff that Penny's doctor had prescribed for her bronchitis, though of course my dose is bigger. Penny was so enthralled by the two identical bottles that I - like an idiot - let her play with them.

So of course she worked off the childproof cap when I wasn't looking and managed to drink an indeterminate amount of the cough syrup.

Chalk up another "first" - our first call to the Poison Control Center. Let's hope it's our last, too.

But Penny's fine. She suffered no ill-effects from the cough syrup, aside from being kind of sticky until we gave up and put her in the bath. And she slept not only right through the night, but late Saturday morning.

Which of course made Matt and I kind of nervous. I got up a couple of times to check on her and make sure she was still breathing, which we haven't done for ages. But she was fine - popped up at 6:30 and was cute and happy and fantastic.

It was enough to make Matt and I consider dosing her with some cough syrup before bed every night.

But she did it again Saturday night, without the aid of drugs. Went to bed a touch early, even, and slept until 6:30 or 6:45 Sunday morning. What luxury!

It had rained all day Saturday - with temperatures hovering in the high 20s and low 30s - but the skies were clear Sunday morning. Really, it was kind of neat - the roads were mostly clear, but all the trees and bushes were coated with ice. With the sun shining on it, it looked like the world had been carved from crystal.

But since the threatened winter storm had never quite materialized, we went over to my parents' for dinner and to celebrate Dad's birthday. We got Dad a Bill Cosby DVD, but I think he was really satisfied just to get to spend a few hours with Penny.

Crystal ice

Since the weather had been so yucky the day before, Mom decided to make comfort food for Dad's birthday dinner - ham and mac-n-cheese and biscuits and baked apples. Almost none of it was diet-friendly. And two pies for dessert - cherry and apple. With ice cream.

(Poor Sam - she's just started the South Beach diet, which means she really can't just decide to throw the diet to the winds for a day. She ate nothing but ham and peas for dinner, and had a single forkful of cherry pie from John's plate. Would that I had her resolve. I ate it all, with seconds. And was duly rewarded when I stepped on the scale this morning. I really have got to knuckle under and be good this week.)

Anyway, we had a good time, and Penny was cute and as good as anyone can expect a toddler to be. She even ate bits of ham and mac-n-cheese and apple off my fork at dinner. And we put her to bed last night a touch later than usual, but with barely a whimper.

And then she woke up at about 3:30. And would not. Go back. To sleep.

She cried for "Ma-ma-ma!" and sobbed. If Matt or I went into her room, she'd be quiet - until we tried to leave. We tried to just wait her out, but she'd fall into a doze, then start awake and start sobbing again.

At about 5, I spent almost 10 minutes edging out of her room, reassuring her with every step, and finally got back to bed. She slept, then, for about half an hour.

I gave up and got up at 5:45, having gotten maybe forty-five minutes' sleep after 3:30. And she was fine and happy, except that as is usual when she's very tired, she was quick to fuss.

I have no idea what's going on. She's not afraid of the dark. She's fine when we put her down. She doesn't want anything, except for Matt or I (preferably me, I think) to be in the room with her, standing beside the crib.

It's really getting to where I'm beginning to think less jokingly about that hit of cough syrup before bed.
