I have to confess, I've had better weekends. The daycare center had a pizza and ice cream party on Friday, in lieu of lunch. Penny picked at her pizza, but had two bowls of ice cream. Astonishingly, she then decided not to take a nap. You know what little kids do when they're tired? They lose all semblance of self-control. Penny had a screaming crying fit from about 6:30 until 7:30, when I finally gave up trying to soothe her and put her to bed. She actually cried for another fifteen minutes or so after that, but at least it wasn't right in my ear. Saturday wasn't too bad. She took a fairly short nap and was a little whiny in the afternoon, but the Brandts came over for dinner, so the excitement overrode most of the whining. She got her first (as far as I know) ice cream on a stick, too, which made for some fun.
Sunday, the miracle was that she slept in until almost seven. But things kind of went downhill from there. She wound up having several timeouts (for hitting me, for refusing to pick up her toys when I asked her several times, for throwing some non-throwing toys... Two-year-old kinds of things) and was generally demanding and whiney. Another shortish nap. In the afternoon, Matt and I thought we'd put her in her swimsuit and take her down to the Water Day that our neighborhood's homeowner's association was throwing. That was... a trial. Item 1: Penny thinks that when we put her in a swim diaper and swimsuit, she's going to get to play in the pool on our deck. She was Very Upset when we went out the front door instead of the back. Item 2: To lug Penny over to the playground where the event was being held, we put her in the wagon that Jill gave her for her birthday. This was actually fine, except that Penny loves to get rides - stroller, wagon, whatever. Loves it loves it loves it. So when we got there, she played in the water for all of about five minutes, then demanded to be let back into the wagon.
We managed to forestall taking her on a ride by giving her a few cheese puffs and two full cups of lemonade, but then all she would do was sit in the wagon and beg for a "ride." Matt and I gave up and took her home. Matt and I had been hoping to chat with some of our neighbors, and that Penny would play with some of the neighbors' kids. But it's looking like she inherited my horrible social instincts, that took me until after college to even begin to overcome, and are still a major struggle. So Matt spent the rest of the afternoon feeling kind of grouchy, and Penny didn't get any less whiny as the day wore on. Is it a little sad that I sometimes look forward to the work week as a break from my weekends? |
