Happy Metrics Day! "When you wake up tomorrow," Matt purred Saturday evening, "you'll be in a very special place." "What place is that?" "You'll be in... a No-Buy Zone." My eyes got big, like this: O_O and my hands started to shake. "Must... buy something... quick!" It was a good weekend, overall. Saturday evening, we went to a cookout/party at my boss's house. For an office party, it wasn't too bad. There were two other small kids there, and Penny wasn't even the loudest of them. Though she had enormous fun with their piano. I thought we were going to have to pry her off that stool with a crowbar. Sunday afternoon, we dropped Penny off with my parents, and Matt and I went to see Serenity. If you've seen it, my enormously spoiler-filled review is here. But it's full of spoilers and if you haven't seen the movie, then please don't read the review, because this review will ruin it for you completely. The non-spoiler summary is: Firefly was a five-star show. Serenity is about a four-star movie. It was very good, but not quite up to the level of the original show, in my opinion. And it'd be a 3-star movie for someone who's never seen Firefly, mostly because the movie didn't have time to really set up all the fairly complex relationships between the crew members that made the show so wonderful. Going into the movie without already knowing that Kaylee's carrying a Statue-of-Libery sized torch for Simon, or that Wash and Zoë are deeply in love but that their marriage is a bit rocky, or that Mal and Inara love each other but refuse to admit it... The movie touched on those things, but it had to say them rather than show them. So if you hadn't seen Firefly and felt all those relationships building, then quite a few scenes in Serenity lose a whole layer of meaning. So if you haven't seen Serenity yet, then rent Firefly before you do. And if you've seen Firefly but not Serenity, then by all means go, and you'll enjoy it, I promise. Just maybe not quite as much as Firefly. |
5 Years Ago: Not that I have any hope we'd actually use it regularly, but at least when these fits of loathing for the clutter overtake me, I'd have someplace logical to put it all.
