27 April 2006
Well, I just had a really really nice day. We had customers in the office all day, which meant I had an excellent excuse to spend the whole workday with my office door closed and wearing my headphones, which really cuts down on distractions. Which means that when I sat down to write, I actually got out almost 1500 words, which is easily twice my usual yield, lately. Then Penny was good for most of the evening -- we played silly games where I'd put the squirrel puppet on my hand and make it walk up her leg and tickle her tummy, or chase her around the room. She spent a lot of time squealing and laughing, and I have never had a bad mood so black that her laugh could not penetrate it. And I wasn't even in a bad mood to start with, last night. She ate a good dinner (and even tried a couple of tortellini!) and was rewarded with a few jelly beans from her Easter stash. After she went to bed, Matt and I watched The Maltese Falcon, which is one of those classics that everyone should see, but I'd never gotten around to. I'm not the biggest fan of the old black-and-white movies; I rented it out of a sense of duty, almost. For the same reason I've read Dumas and Tolkein -- because it's good to be familiar with the classics from which other works are derived. And though I've enjoyed all those things, I honestly usually prefer the newer stuff, even knowing that it's derivative. But I liked Maltese Falcon more than I'd expected to. It helps that I've been trading Scum email with Karen for a bit, so the whole underworld aspects of it appealed to Dawn in my head. It was more than a little cheesy in bits, of course (as the old black-and-whites are prone to) and I was sort of obsessed with watching Humphrey Bogart's overbite. But all in all, it was a fun movie. It took me a while to get to sleep, but once I was under, I slept like the dead. I don't remember opening my eyes again until the alarm went off. The scale had good news for me, despite a minor cheat yesterday afternoon. Penny was good this morning, too. She had a grin on her face when I went into her room to get her out of bed, and she didn't fight me when I took her out of the crib. She wanted to wear orange pants, and when I told her she didn't have any orange pants, she tried for yellow. Her one pair of yellow pants is a little on the small side, but -- eh, so what? So fine, she's wearing yellow today. Then she ran around while Matt and I got dressed, playing with toys and randomly dispensing hugs and telling us importantly what color things were. I'm kind of hoping today will be similarly happy. The customers are back in the office, so I'll be able to close my door again. Maybe I'll even be able to finish this chapter. |
