Adventures In Parenting, #2033:

Penny wanted to visit Ray-Ray yesterday, so we got a late start on dinner, and she wasn't absorbed by the TV while it cooked. She whined about being hungry, and I told her to wait just a few minutes. She walked off into the kitchen.

I heard her moving stuff around, and thought she was rummaging in the fridge. By the time I'd put my computer down and walked around the corner, she had moved the kitchen stool over to the counter, climbed up, and was reaching for the handle of the pot of boiling water.

I yelled, "No!", Penny screamed in startlement, Matt teleported into the kitchen on the fear that Penny's scream was in pain... Our fear made hers worse, and she started crying, and then spent the whole rest of the evening balancing on the ragged edge of hysteria.

Whee.

Cooking on the back burner is no longer enough, I guess.

I have a couple of new grey hairs this morning.

Adventures In Parenting, #1302 (an older lesson, repeated):

"Oh," said Matt, "there was a sign on Penny's door at daycare saying they have two confirmed cases of strep throat."

"Great."

Later: "Penny? Does your throat hurt? Your neck?"

"No!"

"Okay."

This morning, my throat hurts. Just a little. Raw, as if I spent some time screaming yesterday. Which I didn't.

My doctor's office opens at 8:30. If it still hurts then, I'll call and make an appointment. Better to get the diagnosis before the weekend hits. Because if I do have strep, then it's a 90% chance that Penny was the vector, which means she's got it, too, and just hasn't noticed yet.

But I slept much better last night. When I woke up this morning, I felt almost... refreshed.

Small favors, and like that.
