1 June 2006
Happy June! Man, the year is disappearing so fast, I can hardly believe it. Almost halfway already? Damn. Which means you've got about two months until I start obsessing on a near-daily basis about my vacation. Just so you know. The financials person in our office is a brilliant, beautiful woman, but for her, computers are simply a tool she uses to crunch numbers and send emails, and she's not really that interested in knowing how they work. Yesterday she popped her head around the corner into my office and said, "There's a teeny little bug that somehow got into my monitor! I've been watching it all morning, and it's been getting smaller and smaller! How do we get him out?" I thought at first that she was talking about a wandering screen glitch, but no, she meant an actual insect. I had to go look. It was, in fact, very realistic. About the size of a gnat, and it moved very much like a bug that's crawling around on a vertical sheet of glass. Except that she has an LCD monitor. I even poked it, just to make absolutely sure it wasn't a real bug on the outside of the screen. "It's software," I told her. "A virus. Or a practical joke. Real bugs do not show up on the inside of computer monitors. Especially LCD displays. You need to call the helpdesk and report it. And, uh, back up all your work to the server." She looked so horrified, I was almost sorry to have to have told her. But at the same time, I'm glad she hasn't sent me any email lately. But I'm feeling pretty good, because Matt is next to impossible to buy presents for, and I was struck by inspiration yesterday, so I've got Father's Day in the bag. YAY, me! And then I'll have a few months before I have to stress over his birthday and Christmas. |
