5 July 2006
I hope everyone had a good Fourth of July (which is to say, I hope you had a good Independence Day, or else a good Tuesday. Whichever). Ours was nice. Penny actually slept in a bit, and she was in good spirits for pretty much the whole day. We played and ran around and went over to my parents and ate -- my god, did we eat. We had BLTs and corn on the cob and watermelon. My dad fried up six pounds of bacon (for seven people, mind you, one of whom was Penny) -- we didn't eat it all, but you could see the bottom of the plate before we were done. We went through a loaf and a half of bread, and four huge tomatoes, and the gods only know how much mayonnaise and Durkee's spread. Mom had bought at least 24 ears of corn. That's four ears per person. (I'm factoring Penny out because she didn't take more than two bites of her corn, and Matt wound up finishing it for her.) We didn't finish that, either. The watermelon I brought was almost as big as Penny. John and I both went home with a bag of leftovers. Bacon and corn and tomatoes. The corn is uncooked but already shucked, so I expect I'll need to make an adjustment to tonight's menu. I'm kind of hoping the spike in my weight this morning is mostly water-weight due to all the salt and starch I ate last night, but I probably shouldn't bank on it. No regrets, though. It was one of those meals that we have only once or twice a year, and I enjoyed every bite.
