So I'm trying something today. When I went in to the doctor for my pregnancy confirmation, there was a flyer on the wall advertising prenatal yoga classes, right across the street from where I work. Now, I'm not one for new-age crystal twinkie stuff, which yoga often gets filed under, but I have heard many and consistently good things about yoga's ability to help you develop muscle, flexibility, and a sense of balance, all of which I sorely need. So I've been mildly interested in it for a while. There's a yoga DVD in my Netflix queue, actually. This class is specifcally for pregnant women -- which means it's not going to involve anything that would be dangerous to the baby, and it will cater to the peculiar changes that happen to pregnant women, like loosened joints and the overbalancing belly. The woman I talked to on the phone (who teaches the class and is herself pregnant) said that it was also designed to help alleviate a lot of the attendant aches and pains. Better still: It's zero-commitment. They teach the class twice a week. There's no sign-up, there's no minimum number of classes. You pay by the class, so you can go twice a week, or once, or every other week. Whatever works. If you pay for ten classes in advance, you get a discount, but that's pretty much the closest they come to any kind of requirement. So I'm going to give it a try this afternoon, and see how I feel about it. If I like it, I may add it to my routine. I'm hoping I like it. We're not going to do the Lamaze classes again this time around -- it was informative, the first time around, but I don't think I'd learn anything new or suddenly "get" some of the stuff we did last time that seemed just silly. I'm hoping the yoga will be better for the practical sides of that class -- strength and controlled breathing. Anyway, I'll let you know tomorrow how it goes. Whether you want to or not. |
